Twins set new mark in gift final
BY TERRY MORRIS
The Examiner
12 Dec, 2010

WESTBURY twins Abbey and Kate Walters yesterday finished first and second in a close finish in the Ulverstone Gift at the Penguin athletic track.

The 17-year-olds showed both will be strong contenders for the Tasmanian Christmas carnivals series, which gets under way at Rosebery next Saturday.

Respected athletics commentator Brian Paine said it was the first time he could remember in more than 30 years' involvement in the sport that identical twins had finished first and second in a gift final.

Abbey's win completed the dominance of her coach Fay Denholm at the Ulverstone carnival. She prepared the winners of five of the eight races on the program.

Denholm-trained runners also took out the Ulverstone Men's Gift, both the men's and women's 400 metre finals and the women's 70m final.

The gift win continued a successful start to the season for Abbey Walters, who has now won five races in the lead-up to the major series.

The Launceston College student also took out the 70m final beating Abby Chapman and Laura Nicholson.

Abbey and Kate were originally training partners under Denholm's coaching until Kate decided to concentrate on jumping events and switched to coach Wim Vaessen.

Andrew Robinson celebrated his birthday in style with an impressive win over last year's winner Ryan O'Halloran and backmarker Charlie Leek in the Ulverstone Men's Gift.

Robinson turned 18 on Thursday and the win continued his good early season form. He also won the Simplot Australia Gift at Devonport the week before.

Exciting youngsters Abbey De La Motte and Darcy Lahey made it two North-West wins in less then a month when they took out the 400m finals.

De La Motte, 16, was fresh from winning a silver medal in the 400m at the Australian All Schools titles in Melbourne the week before.

Lahey was impressive, running from a backmark and leading into the straight to beat Mark Nicholls and Alec Eiszele.

De La Motte and Lahey both won 400m finals at the West Park carnival last month.

Doug Hamerlok outsprinted Jerome Whiteley to win the 1600m handicap and Mark Brownrigg ended his partner Kristy Rootes's dominance of the masters 300m event when he came from the backmark to beat Paul Viney.

Rootes was going for her fifth win in the masters this season and led into the straight before being overtaken.
