IMPORTANT MESSAGE !

2013 LITHGOW FLASH GIFT CANCELLED !

Everything was in place... record entries, interstate runners, the track in best-ever condition and the pre-event organisation accomplished. I travelled to Lithgow yesterday for the Media Launch of the carnival with the newspaper and TV journalists, sponsors’ representatives and Councillors all in attendance ready to conduct interviews... but there was a snag !
Lithgow organisers had made enquiries to the experts to clarify the dire weather warnings for Saturday that were being released by the Weather Bureau and the response was ugly . Forecasts for Lithgow for Saturday stated that there was a 100% probability for two inches (50mm) of rain with much colder temperatures and high winds to accompany it.

Therefore, Deputy Mayor Ray Thompson (Chair of the Lithgow Flash Gift Organising Committee) and Councillor Wayne McAndrew hastily convened a meeting with sponsors, local organisers and ‘yours truly’ to make a decision and it was agreed that , as the Committee is very keen to develop this carnival into a top-quality event and keep it going for many years, they did not want it to be damaged by struggling through a bad Lithgow day with reduced spectator and sponsorship representative support together with consequent reduced profile as would happen if it were to be held in very bad weather on Saturday.

The decision was therefore taken to cancel the event for this Saturday.

However, the Lithgow organisers and sponsors are very keen to make this event a top-notch marquee event in Australian athletics to appropriately honour ‘Lithgow girl’ and Australian sporting icon Marjorie Jackson, “The Lithgow Flash” and winner of 100m and 200m Gold Medals at the Helsinki Olympics.

Consequently it was tentatively suggested that this carnival seek an appropriate date in the early part of next season upon which to hold it. This should be known in a few weeks and as soon as it is decided everyone will be informed.

In fact the calendar of all NSWAL events from October through to Christmas should be known soon and will hopefully be released within a few weeks.

MANY APOLOGIES FOR THIS TURN OF EVENTS.

Ken English.
