Is there any chance of a poll on the quickest VAL surfaces or just a few posts on what people believe are the quickest meets to race at. Sometimes it's hard to guage results when reading through old performances. Obviously synthetic surface gifts such as the Ringwood Gift are ahead of the grass ones but could i get a Top ten of some sort?

Maryborough circular track - consistently produces fast 400 times 'cause it's consistently ~390 metres long.

Loved that comment there ToM.

During the time I was competing, the Wangatatta & Bendigo circle tracks were always rated as fast tracks. Many a Australian or World record attempt was done at the Wang track over the 400m 440yds and 550m distances.

For sprint tracks, Stawell was always the best prepared and fast, but to me and this is only my views, the Bendigo track was faster than Stawell with the Wang track again high on my likings. yes, I won on both of these tracks, but it is the surface and the perseeved quickness that impressed me.

Granted, I did not compete in NSW (dodgy...lol) and SA (ran in Tassie over Xmas)the Burnie track was always firm but not necessarily fast, only the timekeepers were fast and we always ran into a head wind. Jupiter's (Gold Coast Gift) at the Carrara ground was a reasonable track too.

Not much has changed with the "main tracks" mentioned above. Today's tracks that rate well would be the Stonnington track (old Prahran Gift)and the Burramine track.

These are my thoughts, what are yours ??

Agreed, Matt, regarding Stonnington. Really hoping for a balmy February evening on a firm Prahran oval for some fast running under lights.

As a relative neophyte to the Pro running ranks, Stawell is a delightful surface, although it was definitely on the soft side in 2012. Albury seemed quite well prepared this year and had some fast Gift and 400 times, even factoring in the Josh Ross lift and the distance between Parkinson and the rest of the field in the 400.

The worst VAL surface I've seen to date had to be the final running of the Cranbourne event a couple of years ago on the racecourse. The straight line 400 was an unorthodox concept with plenty of quirky potential, but the sprint track itself was horrible and uneven.

Below is my views on tracks I have raced on over the years

South Australia:
Vansittart Park - Mt Gambier Gift was near perfect every time and a quick track too when conditions favoured
Gaza - Gaza Footy Oval saw only one or two race meets in my time, but from memory, a fantastic surface and fast runs for early in the season. I think I ran 7.42 that day for the 70m, and it was an early November race meet!

Victoria:
Tom Flood - Bendigo has always seen some pretty quick times in both the straight & circular track
Keilor used to be pretty fast (Brimma winning from 0.75m in just under 12.2 showed how fast that track used to be)
Central Park - Stawell is almost always perfectly prepared, accept for back in the early 2000's after the track was redone, too sandy and extremely slow, or when Bill Sutton doesn't double check the track and it's too long! Easy Bill, just a joke Laughing

NSW:
Sir Joseph Banks Park - Bay Gift back in the 90's was always very fast, it was a firm narrow track and always had favourable conditions, just look through the historical times, Cappo running 11.89 or 11.91 from scratch from memory.

This are some of my recollections of the tracks I have raced at and how I remember the quality and speed of the surfaces.

Tom Flood had a pretty quick gift track in '02, unfortunately for some, eh Macca? ;-)

Touche Tony!

Thanks Azza, well, you win some, you lose some. Not every race or season goes to plan, but it's all panned out fine in the long run. No regrets here.

At least I retired before I sunk so low and began running distance events
Very Happy
