A new chance in the Bendigo Opal has emerged. Glen Stephens had 35m at Maryborough got a 2m lift for Rye and has now got a further 2m lift to have him on 39m. Looks an ugly perception when his ties to the 400m handicapper are well known. Another of the handicappers former athletes, Dujon Fuzzard has gone from 26m to 28m after only 2 runs. I hope these discretionary 2m lifts are across the board. I know I have ran twice and got nothing. The perception looks bad.
In the 1600m, either MOB has worked his influence for the Hippo boys or some of the handicaps are incorrect. Every week the distance handicaps are out of whack and after the Rye 800m debacle more care is needed.

A more detailed look indicates the wrong handicaps have been listed for some athletes. Majority of the field looks correct.
Here are some of the incorrect handicaps.
Michael Mara ran 4.02 off 105m and 4.02.6 off 100m at Stawell so should have about 70m. He is listed as 105m
David Spence won Rye off 125m and has 140m
Patten ran off 65m at St Albans and has 120m
Deane won Ringwood off 120m and has 120m
Glasson won Ararat off 190m and has 190m
Josh Nolan won Bendigo off 75m in 4.03 and ran 4.02 at Stawell off 85m. Should be off 40-50m.

Ribera you are absolutely correct.
A number of these 1600 handicaps are incorrect. It would seem that the handicaps for a number of athletes has gone in with old marks. So before we all get too carried away I would suggest completely ignoring them.
I have emailed the people concerned so hopefully we will see a correct set of marks in the near future.

Surely the marks are proof read before being made public? Obviously not.
It must be frustating to an athlete to see the mark and not know whether it's fair dinkum.

Steady on Ribera, your treading on thin ice my friend!

Upon viewing 1600m handicaps at Albury it was obvious to Blind Freddy that incorrect handicaps had been listed, what more would we expect from VAL head office at present.

Given it was as obvious as the nose on your face these handicaps are an incorrect, there was really no need to point out the glarringly obvious, espeically in the manner which you've done so.

Nice subtle touch throwing Glasson into the mix, the only non Hippo runner to deflect your intention which is clear given your suggestion that Mob has worked some influence.

Rude and offence Ribera, if you want to start a war then you're going the right way about it. Evil or Very Mad

Now now children. No need to get too worked up.

A quick look at DizzyRunner's 'Ranking Guide to Distance Races' reveals that the Albury 1600m only ranks as the 12th most important distance race for the season. Perhaps save the squabbling for the weeks pre-Bendigo/Stawell. Be grateful we aren't all racing in Tassie week-in and week-out.

For the record, DizzyRunner has found Watto to be most approachable when it comes to discussions around handicaps. Whilst Dizzy might not always agree with the guidelines, they have always, under the current and past handicapper, been well explained.

Settle down guys, a lot of marks have been released but not adjusted as there has been a race a day/week prior.

A runner that was off 44m is still showing off 44m however he is actually been brought down quite a bit.

I'd have to agree with MOB, if you have a question regarding handicaps don't express it and name names on an open forum. There is a procedure in place to do so. The Mark is not the athletes fault either.

I have expressed one concern the right way via the VAL website and it was rectified swiftly.

More training and less forum time will gain you an extra meter. Complaining on a forum will give you nothing.

Well said ProTrackRunner, because the 12 seconds it took me to write this post has severely hindered by ability to get in an extra session of 8x1km later this evening.

A $10,000 Gift and there's runners off more than 12.0m? Surely there is a more respectable limit than 16.50 for a race of this calibre? Regardless of whether Josh Ross enters or not, the limit should remain at 12.0m. 10% (12m) of the distance for a race worth $10,000 is enough.

How the blokes who use to run in the 70/80's must look in sheer frustration at the rubbish that goes on today......

Under rule 2.33 of the VAL Regulations, the Gift limits are:

  • Open Classic Gift 10% (of the race distance)

  • Open 1 Gift 12%

  • Open 2 Gift 15%

  • Open 3 Gift 20%

So can we assume the athletes off 12m plus will go back to 12.00?

Don't forget the field will get an extra 0.75-1.00m lift for St Albans

Begs the question what will the limit be for Stawell?

The field will not receive a 0.75-1m lift for St. Albans as marks were already declared so Josh Ross will start behind scratch. The limit last year was 14m and I would assume that was the same. The limit was then lifted to 16m so the mark of 16.5 would be above the adjusted limit.

Joel Bee 3.25m is another example of the rules not being followed.

Wins Maryborough off 2.75m and if he receives the minimum penalty would put him off 1m. Add the 2m Josh Ross lift and Joel should be running off 3m at best. All other Maryborough winners over the past few years were penalised a minimum of 2m yet Joel receives a 1.5m penalty for a classic gift.

whatever happened to joining the pros getting a mark and keeping it if you couldnt win then training hard to win a race off the mark you had and then the handicapper penalised you for your time you ran or the prisemoney you won its all too complicated!!!!!!!

the penalty for maryborough in scale of penalty's as per rules is $7001/10000 1.5 metre's

makes mr bee's handicap2.75 less 1.5 =1.25 plus ross lift =3.25 as per handicap declared.

Can someone explain to me how Melissa breen an 11.27 100m runner has 13m in the gift? That equates to a 12.0589. She could take out any gift she wanted off that mark? I would think she should be on at max 10 she is a high quality athlete regardless of her gender.

Ellia Green nearly held off a fast finishing Josh ross off a mark around 13m at St Albans in 12.6xx with a major headwind

I'd expect Mel Breen to be a fair bit quicker.

Will definitely be one of the favorites.

For the number of times Breen's entered an open gift, her mark is very generous.
Your average runner, who can't breake 11.3, would need to be running week in week out in the VAL for 5 years to get anything near that mark.
She should be on around 10 to 11.

Breen's run of 11.27 was just legal with a 2.0 tail from memory so she is not normally that quick but with her mark she might not have to go close to that.

Let's hope there is a bookmaker on site as I know where my money would be going.

In reference to my (Ribera’s) post on Wednesday. It came to my attention on the weekend that the comments have been seen as offensive to some.

Regarding the mile handicaps, the comments were tongue in cheek and a poke in the ribs to a couple of mates in the Hippo crew. It was taken the wrong way and I wish to apologise to MOB, Watto and any Hippo crew who may have found it insulting or taken offence.

Regarding the 400m, the comments were intended to raise perception awareness and were not directly accusing anyone of anything. This sport with its many close ties and old friendships, revolves at times around perceptions. The “whispers around the track” had been about Glen’s handicap lifts and I listed it on an open forum. I wish to apologise for any angst caused to the parties mentioned.

Maybe people need to take the approach of "type, proof read, then sleep on it", before clicking send. As we all know, the taste of a foot is not very nice. It tastes very similar to humble pie.....
