Willo the Whisp

The Hobart carnival has been postponed to a date to be fixed. The decision follows the devastating fires which destroyed the home of Ray and Kathleen Quarrell and all the carnival gear, along with the majority of properties in Dunalley. The Tasmanian Athletic League will work with the organisers to find an alternate date for the carnival.

The TAL has launched an appeal for Ray and Kathleen following the loss of their home and all of their possessions. Donations may be forwarded to the TAL at PO Box 3070, Ulverstone 7315 or via EFT to TAL, BSB 037 002; account number 118896.

Cash donations may be deposited to the above account at Westpac branches, marked as “Appeal”. Enquiries may be directed to TAL Secretary, Glenn Foster on 0409 869 525.

Ray is now in his 42nd year as a Trainer/Coach and 35th year as a Runners & Trainers representative, after also enjoying a successful stint as a competitor. Ray and Kathleen, together with a small band of helpers, re-instated the Hobart carnival in 1983 and have run it ever since.

All donations will be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Glenn Foster

Bushfires cancel Hobart carnival

The Advocate
Jan. 5, 2013

THE Hobart Spikes and Bikes carnival scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled due to event organiser Ray Quarrell losing his house in the devastating bushfires at Dunalley.

"We were on such a great high earlier in the week with wins at Devonport and Burnie. But we can't run the carnival tomorrow as all the equipment was at our house,'' Quarrell said today.

"It's made even more sad, as my mother grew up in the house and I'd done it up with all the family history in it.''

The Hobart Athletics Club, which organises the carnival, said it hopes to re-schedule the event soon.

Remember Ray Quarrell winning a couple of Stawell Gift Heats, 1977 then 1980,met and spoke to him only once, found him to be a very polite and genuine person hope the SAAL allow me to assist in the appeal at our next running meet at Tea Tree Gulley!

FROM the TAL Website

The Hobart Bikes & Spikes carnival has been re-scheduled for Monday 28th January 2013 (Australia Day long weekend). Entries have been re-opened until midnight Monday 14th January. All events are as previously scheduled.

Athletes who entered for the original carnival are asked to confirm, vary or withdraw their entries by 14th January by email to or phone/text 0409 869 525.

The Devonport Athletic Club has kindly loaned us the carnival gear required for Hobart as everything was lost in the fires at Dunalley which destroyed Ray & Kathleen's home. Please show your support for the Quarrells and the Hobart Athletic Club by competing at this carnival.

Entries for St Helens have been extended until midnight tonight (Tuesday 8th January).

Entries for Richmond close at St Helens or online at midnight on Sunday 20th January.

Please support these final carnivals for the 2012/13 season.

Big thank you for the generosity of the spectators,
runners, and SAAL officials at the Tea Tree Gully pro-Meet on Saturday night.Wishing Tassie Trainer Ray Quarrell and family a speedy recovery after losing their home and possessions.
