Sclanders in doubt for Bay Sheffield classic

By Warren Partland
The Advertiser
December 27, 2012

SOUTH Australia's leading hope for Bay Sheffield glory, Tom Sclanders, is in danger of having 12 months of focused ambition ruined by shin soreness.

Sclanders was on crutches on Monday, unable to put weight on his leg because of inflammation, and he is in doubt for the rich sprint at Colley Reserve today.

The setback has left the speedster distraught, although a decision on a start in the heats will not be made until he tests the leg in the warm-up.

"It's devastating," Sclanders' coach Paul Young said.

"He was the pick of the SA runners by a fair way from what we saw at the pre-Bay and Brighton meets.

"We probably set him for the race 13 months ago after he won at Whyalla. We knew he had the ability but he was underdone at Whyalla and not in condition to win, but he did anyway.

"So if he had a decent winter we knew he could improve substantially, which he has.

"He has been fairly distraught about it this week. It is difficult to deal with when you have basically put your life on hold for 12 months."

Sclanders has been hampered by the shin problem for seven weeks. X-rays cleared him of bone damage and Young said the issue was believed to be under control.

Despite the problem, Sclanders won the pre-Bay 120m followed by the 70m at Brighton on December 16 to claim early favouritism for the Bay Sheffield.

Young said the injury had progressively worsened since the Brighton triumph and Sclanders "did not run well" in a trial on Sunday.

"Tom was probably my best genuine chance in the Bay Sheffield since Clay Watkins won in 2005," Young said.

While Sclanders is under a cloud, training partner Jordan Caldow will go into the heats on the back of impressive trial form.

But Young said Caldow faced a tough task in his bid for a third successive Bay Sheffield victory.

"He has improved a couple of metres although it is going to be a big ask to win again," Young said.

"I'd love this wind to hang around, that will help him."

If the conditions for the opening day of the carnival yesterday prevail, they will be racing into a strong headwind.

Bookmaker Warren Barrington slashed Josh Tiu's odds from 12/1 to 2/1 favourite.
