Melbourne runner wins Latrobe Gift

The Advocate
Dec. 27, 2012

NOT even a brief bout of gastro could stop Melbourne runner Rhyce Parkinson from sealing the biggest win of his career, as he claimed the Huon Aquaculture Men's Latrobe Gift.

Parkinson wasn't even sure if he would make it to the start line yesterday, but his decision to get out of bed paid handsome dividends, as he held off the rest of the field from his mark of 10.50 metres to win in a time of 12.17 seconds.

Defending champion Andrew Robinson couldn't make it two in a row and had to settle for second place, with last week's Rosebery Gift champion Dan Lemoto in third.

Trained by John Henry, the lanky Robinson was making his second appearance in Tasmania and said he felt quietly confident that he could pull off the win.

``It's dangerous to expect a win, but I had confidence in myself that I would do really well today, and I couldn't be happier,'' the 22-year-old said. ``Last year here I made a couple of finals, but I've had a really good preseason and the work has obviously paid off.

``I wasn't sure I was going to get here this morning, so to pull it all together I couldn't be happier.''

Despite also winning his heat and semi-final earlier in the day, Robinson doesn't class himself as an out and out sprinter.

``I would class myself as a 400-metre runner, as I've had a few wins over that distance in Melbourne,'' Robinson said.
