Boden bound for Christmas carnival
Dec. 5, 2012,

Australian Olympian Lauren Boden is heading to Tasmania later this month for the Christmas carnivals series.
OLYMPIANS Mel Breen and Lauren Boden head a strong team of Canberra runners coming to Tasmania for the Christmas carnivals.

Breen and Boden are two of the nine athletes prepared by Matt Beckenham making their second assault on the series.

Breen and Boden both represented Australia at the London Olympics, with Breen competing in the 100metres and Boden a beaten semi-finalist in the 400m hurdles.

They have entered for all three major North-West carnivals, with both of them running in the Latrobe and Burnie gifts.

Breen was the backmarker in the Burnie Gift earlier this year and had to lower her colours to Victorian Laura-Jane Hilditch in the final.

Boden has entered for the Devonport Gift (400m) and Breen will run in the 200m handicap on the opening night of the Devonport carnival.

The two women have also made themselves available for the skins and backmarkers events at each of the carnivals.

"We're delighted to have them back and all told Matt is bringing a talented group of runners," athletics co-ordinator Rod Walker said.

Breen and Boden had offered to assist in junior coaching clinics with Little Athletics competitors during the carnivals.

Making up the group of runners are Luke Storta, Brandan Garlic, Grant Billingham, Ollie Wurm, Rachel Carnegie, Chloe Jamieson and Beckenham himself.

Beckenham, 36, is a former Olympian and he has entered for the 70m handicap at Latrobe and the Devonport and Burnie gifts.

Wurm is a winner of the 2010 Burnie Gift and is hopeful of adding a second sash to his record.

Walker said there would be a lot of interest in the performance of Jamieson, a junior champion, at Devonport and Burnie.

She has entered for both the gifts and other races in the two carnivals.

Walker said the finalisation of entries from Beckenham had given the carnivals a wonderful line- up of competitors.

"When we started off planning for the series I didn't know how we would go, but we have some fantastic talent and, given the calibre of bike riders competing, we should be in for a big week," he said.
