$15 000 Peel Gift Carnival

WA’s richest Professional event The inaugural $15 000 Peel Gift carnival will be hosted by the Peel Thunder Football Club at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah on Saturday January 5th, 2012.

The event includes Australia’s richest 550m race the Peel Classic and will be held for both male and female athletes with a handicapping format allowing elite sprinters to race against club athletes on level terms.

Race – Prizes/Money (Classification)

120m Peel Gift – $10 001 (Classic).
550m Race – $3001. (Classic, Australia’s richest 550m race).
70m Sprint – $1500. (Group 1 race)
120m Novice Race – $500. (Group 3 race)
40m Footballers Sprint Race – $500. (Group 3 race)
Plus Little Athletics races – Trophies & medals.

There will be a prizepool totaling more than $15 000. This event promises to become one of the most exciting and lucrative pro-running events in Western Australia & Australia.

Entries will be opening on Monday November 5th 2012.

It's not unusual for races that carry significant prizemoney, regardless of the sport, to highlight the value of the prize in the publicity or reporting of the event. Eg: Much of the horse racing news in the last few weeks have discussed the $3m Cox Plate or the $6m Melbourne Cup.

It's part of the promotion and appeal of the event. The WCAL are hoping to entice interstate athletes to Perth and the prospect of winning a significant sum to offset the expenses is something worth considering.

As JH alludes to in another thread. This division between amateurs and pro's was (should have been) eradicated in 1985 when John Dinan & Chris Perry started running think 27 years later in these enlightened times that some would despise others for running in a sport that offers prizemoney is pretty sad. Can be an expensive sport at times.........
