Brendan Matthews off 5.25m will be right in this.

Made the Stawell final off 5.75m when everyone else's marks were out for Stawell. NSW handicapper has pulled everyone in for the start of the season and he meets most far better off.

Nothing at all

Agree! If Matthews is in PB shape, he will be very hard to beat.

6 Re: Queanbeyan Marks on Wed Nov 24, 2010 8:27 am

Keita could win again. He is back 0.75m and most from Macksville are out 0.25.

Faster track Queanbeyan which would suit him and he won Macksville by about 1m. He will final at least.

MattyB - 12 winners at the meet in the last 5 years. You would think, given the strong representation of the stable, that one or more winners at Queanbeyan on Saturday will come from Matty B's crew.

Too Good

Sheppard looks too good off 7.75. He's in good form and has had some good racing recently to bring him up for this.

Fletcher ran well at Macksville and should finish top 3.

Can't see Matthews getting too close. Galic should be able to beat him.

Keita next best.

Beckenham’s squad ready for 2010 Queanbeyan Gift

by AACT Media
updated Nov 25, 2010

A squad of 22 athletes will take to Queanbeyan Park on Saturday 27th November for the annual Queanbeyan Gift with the squad coached by Matt Beckenham trying to make it a hat trick of Gift winners after Brendan Matthews won in 2008 and Luke Storta took the title in 2009. Both Brendan and Luke will be attempting to become the first person to win the gift twice while local boy Patrick Elliott will be looking to win his own gift after making the final last year.

Other squad athletes in contention for the $10000 first prize may include 2010 Stawell Gift winner Tom Burbidge and 2010 Macksville finalist Stephen Sheppard.

The squad will also be represented by 7 girls in the Women’s Gift including Commonwealth Games representatives and former winner of the gift Melissa Breen (2007) and Lauren Boden (2008). Runs in the family
Canberra Times
27 Nov, 2010

Brendan Matthews earns a crust as a courier, ferrying packages across town as quickly as possible.

And some significant pocket money awaits the Canberran should he emulate that speed in today's Queanbeyan Gift.

Matthews, 19, is one of four members of his family competing in the iconic carnival at Queanbeyan Park.

His father Kevin and mother Vicki will compete in veterans events, while older brother Jesse will battle his younger sibling in the 120m feature race.

Matthews won the event in 2008, and is attempting to become the first person to win the race twice.

The crack field will vie for a slice of the $16,000 prizemoney, up from $14,000 last year, with the winner claiming a $10,000 cheque.

''Obviously our sport is nowhere near as big financially as the footy codes, so when these things come along everyone licks their lips,'' Matthews said.

Having played AFL as a child, Brendan opted to follow 28-year-old Jesse on to the track at age 15.

The age gap prevented the competitive fire between the brothers burning too brightly.

But Jesse's feats did set Brendan a target to chase, which he has since surpassed.

Jesse enjoyed a stint in the AIS gymnastics program, before pulling the pin in his late teens to concentrate on touch football.

''We do have that rivalry, but it's all fun and no one is really that serious about it,'' Brendan said.

''He was the one that mostly got me into athletics.

''My dad played touch footy for Australia and my other brother Ricky (25) played at a high level too, so we're a pretty sporty family.

''Jesse's just got married and is a firefighter, so he's put it [athletics] on the backburner now.''

Matthews won the title two years ago from a mark of 9.75m, but faces a tougher task today beginning from 5.25m.

After ''bumming his start'' in the semis last year Matthews, who is a part of ACT running coach Matt Beckenham's squad, is keen for redemption.

''It's a pretty open race this year and will be a lot tougher than when I won it, when everything fell into place,'' he said.
