2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift to be run and won on
Easter Tuesday

For the first time in the event’s rich and colourful history, the 130th running of Australia’s most famous footrace will be held on Easter Tuesday in 2011.

Due to Anzac Day coinciding with Easter Monday next year, the 2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift carnival will be extended out over five days from April 22 to 26.

The Gift semis and final will be held on Easter Tuesday, whilst the heats will remain on Easter Saturday.

Following the traditional Calcutta/Calling of the Card on Good Friday, races will be spread out across the remaining four days and the 2011 timetable will be designed to give athletes the opportunity to participate in a greater number of events across the long weekend.

Races will commence after 1pm on Anzac Day and spectators will be asked to contribute a gold coin to enter Central Park, with money raised to be donated to the RSL.

Stawell Athletic Club President Charlie Baird said the Club had been working hard during the ‘off-season’ to secure the future of Australia’s richest footrace and capitalise on the many achievements unveiled in 2010.

“Over the last few months, we have been developing a range of strategies to strengthen the financial stability of the Club, boost participation and generate even greater media coverage,” Baird said.

“2011 Stawell Athletic Club memberships which include a number of benefits are now available to be purchased via the Stawell Gift website, and we encourage Gift supporters to sign up and support the Club.

“Last year’s fundraising committee is back in operation, and the Hall of Fame is now open seven days a week and in conjunction with the Northern Grampians Shire and Stawell Visitors Centre is a major tourist destination.

“In conjunction with the Victorian Athletic League (VAL), we are endeavouring to attract a greater participation base, and the ‘athlete friendly’ race program which we are developing will allow runners to compete in more events across the long weekend.”

Baird also confirmed that the Stawell Athletic Club would not increase ticket prices for the 2011 carnival, with the entry price remaining unchanged for the third straight year.

“Entry prices for the final of the Australia Post Stawell Gift on Easter Tuesday remain great value for money at $25 for adults, $15 for concession and $60 for a family. A season ticket is only $50 and the family weekend pass costs just $95.

“In addition, this year children will be able to gain free entry on Sunday for the Stawell Regional Health Family Day.

“Following its successfully introduction last year, a joint ticket that allows entry to the athletics on Saturday and Tuesday and the Big 6 Stawell Cup Races on Sunday will also be available again.”

The Australia Post Stawell Gift remains as illustrious as ever amongst the nation’s sporting fans, with a record peak of 498,000 viewers tuning in to catch the action on Network Ten and One HD in 2010.

Although the 2011 program for Easter Tuesday is subject to discussions with Network Ten and the Australia Network, the 2011 Gift is once again expected to attract an extensive national and international audience.

I can't recall there ever being an ANZAC Gift, but what a great concept if it could be produced.
