If I was the league I would be really worried a couple ofv those distance events are going to fall right away.
It could be an embarrassment to have 4 or 5 runners running around in a 1600 metre race when sponsors have put good money up.
Looking through the lists theres several dual acceptors so I cant see the current numbers standing up.
Too late now but perhaps the league could have put on an under 14 or under 17 races and got some real local flavour running.Would have been great for the crowd TURNER V LOCAL HERO The over 35 and open 1600m race should be a combined race.
When the two 1600 races fall right away ,you will see what I mean

Should combine the open and the over 35's 1600. shouldnt be two separate races if there's less than 8 runners in a field. should just scrap the old fellas mile.

Totally agree with Oldtimer.
Still give out two sashes but combine the races or else it is going to be a very boring afair FOR both RACES

The first of the major Gifts takes place at Whyalla this weekend, and with big dollars up for grabs, it will no doubt make for an exciting final Saturday Night. Last years winner Dylan Hicks isnt entered for this event, however last years runner up Alex Saliu is and will be looking for a better showing than what he has displayed so far this season. Limited numbers for this years carnival, which may open the door for a few youngsters to make a mark here. Last Weeks winner Brett Richards cops a 1/4m pull for his win last week, however, he wont come into contention here due to a hamstring injury.

So, the 2010 Whyalla Gift Final in no particular order.

Ryan Hancock
First run for the year for the younger of the 2 hancock's so will be looking to hit his straps nice and early here. Has a great record here, making the final on the last 2 occasions. Is a 1/2 metre better off than this time last year where he ran 5th, so expect him to keep up the good record and final here.

Dale Woodhams
Jumped off the bandwagon last week after a poor start to the year, but showed signs that he's up and about at Reynella. Doesnt have Scafidi, Richards, Grimwade or Caldow to deal with here, and based on that, he should be all over this here. Expect him to improve again here and make his 2nd Whyalla Final in 3 years.

Jordan Tronnolone
Was very impressive in the Gift at Reynella, leading the majority of the way before being nipped on the line by Richards and Scafidi. Curios to know, both placegetters dont feature here so that puts this man in the box seat to stamp his mark and take out his first major gift. Should go very close, and a podium place beckons, however experience may be the key. The Winner??

Damian Tohl
Approaching the stage of the season where this man really starts to show his form. Featured in the last 2 gift finals this year, so theres no reason why he cant go 3 from 3 here. Will make the final with this depleted field, but im predicting he wont win it. Podium place a distinct possibility!!

Jarrad Dartnall
Has looked impressive from what weve seen this season, Finalled in the 200 at Flinders, and being he skipped last weeks Reynella Gift, it indicates that hes eyeing this one off here. Will be a major player in the upcoming events, and being he just missed out on a podium place last year, expect him to try and go a few better this time round. A contender!!

Clint Tobin
We'll finish the final off with a genuine outsider and being the limit at the Bay is 11m, you can expect an honest showing from this man. Was a close 3rd in his semi to eventual winner Richards at Reynella, and with the absentees, will be giving them something hard to chase down. Will be leading for alot of the way, and might scrape into this final. Roughie!!

Others who come into consideration
Gross = Made the Reynella Final, and with half that field missing, should be liking his chances.

Nitschke = 300m run last week was quality, and wasnt too far off in the gift. Im a fan of him, so he deserves a mention.

Koschade = Be good to see him run down the track here, and if he does, he'll be there abouts.

Also good to see 2009 Bay Sheffield Winner Russell Scott for the first time this season. Tough handicap, but should make a good account for himself.

Good oil

Word around town is this is the meet when TMS flex their muscles. Watch for a TMS runner to win Whyalla. Can't name him but he's improved out of sight and flying.

R Hancock? Don't think he'll be interested in whyalla, and first gift for year aswell!
Tim Johnsons group are all running well, however can't see any who have improved 'out of sight'. Must be from Aaron Harrisons group.....or just some bloke taking the piss as per normally

pie man, tips around the mark including other choices. Hancock, tobin in the final, but no tohl, dartnall, woodhams and tronnolone miss. Thiel bak in form, hancock great first gift, gross another final, saliu looked solid before pulling out of final with soreness. Nitschke a suprise finalist? Pie man's tipping job becomes a bit tougher for mount gambier??? Keep up the good previews pie man....
