Dandenong Gift Sunday 14th Novmeber 2010
The Victorian Athletic League running ventured out to Dandenong this weekend.
Runners were gifted with a new ground at Shepley Oval. The surface was
presented in perfect condition considering the amount of rain we experienced on
Saturday. Wally Meechan and his committee should be thanked for a great day.
The summary of each event is listed below.
300m Gift
There were 4 heats of the Gift. Heat winners were as follows; Matthew
Hargreaves (36.52), Nick Howard (36.75), Shane Ezard (36.98) and Cam Dunbar
(36.97).
The 300m Gift was a great race with the self trained, Fabrice Melanie bursting
through the pack with 50m to go to record a very impressive win. Fabrice won in
a time of 35.82 and ran off 16m. Running home well for second was the Wally
Meechan trained Chris Cato who looked the winner on the turn and Shane Ezard
managed to hold off Matthew Hargreaves for third position.
300m Womens/Veterans
There were 4 heats of the 300m Womens/Vets. Heat winners were as follows;
Tony O'Shea (38.72), Steph Mollica (39.03), Dennis Hughes (38.79), Todd
Ireland (39.63)
The 300m Women's/Veterans event was also a keenly contested affair. Runners
Tony O'Shea and Dennis Hughes pulled clear of the pack half way down the
straight. It looked as though Dennis was out-sprinting Tony until the last 20m
when Tony made a big dive for the line and managed to edge out Dennis in a
photo finish. Tony ran off 59m and recorded a winning time of 38.39. Steph
Mollica put in a good run to gain third position.
550m Open
There were 4 heats of the 550m Open. Heat winners were as follows; Wayne
Dalziel (1.15.92), James Deane (1.17.88), Mark Andrews (1.16.02), David Woods
(1.14.77)
The 550m Open was won in brilliant style by the Benny Tancredi trained David
Woods. David made his winning move down the back straight when he put a big
gap on the field. David ran off 59m and recorded a winning time of 1.12.78
running a game second was the evergreen James Deane and hanging on for third
was Justin Murphy who is one of the most consistent runners in the VAL.

1600m Open
The mile saw a win to the Wayne James trained, Sean Beer. Sean lead from his
frontmark of 375m and was really never is doubt, winning by a large margin.
Sean recorded a winning time of 4.32.81. The Mark Hipworth trained Barry Tossol
ran a fantastic race to finish second and did look some danger to winner with
200m to go, but couldn't quite make up the required ground. Corey Lawson was
an eye catching run off his 100m backmark, he flew home for third placing just
knocking out Neil Brennan and Brendan Liddicoat who ran respectable races.
NEXT EVENT
Our next event is the Movember Gift. It will be held at Aberfeldie on Friday 19th
November.

Has Melanie split from Bruce Gulliver? Good run over 300m, as one of the problems for him in the past was he couldn't run out the 120.
