Stephen Francis reprimanded by JAAA after apology
sportingeagle.com
9th November 2010

Stephen Francis, arguably one of the world's greatest coaching minds, has been issued with a strong reprimand by the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) for his involvement in the positive findings on his athlete, Shelly Ann Fraser.

Fraser returned a positive test for the non-performance enhancing drug Oxycodone, at the Shanghai Diamond League in May and was later banned for six months.

It was reported that she was given the drugs by her coach, Francis, who later had to answer to the JAAA.

A statement, headlined "Announcement Coach Vincent S Francis" posted on the JAAA website on November 5, 2010, read: "Further to the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association's sanctioning of athlete Shelly Ann Fraser (with a six (6) month suspension) for the use of the banned substance Oxycodone, the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association met with her coach, Mr. (Stephen) Vincent Francis."

"Following discussions at a meeting as well as his written statement in which Mr. Francis apologized for his dereliction in the case and acknowledged the embarrassment he caused to the JAAA et al, Mr. (Stephen) Vincent Stephen Francis has been issued a strong reprimand by the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association and has been cautioned that any recurrence will lead to stronger sanctions''.

"In order to preserve the integrity of Jamaica's Track and Field Athletics, the JAAA is appealing to all coaches and other athlete support personnel that this should be a lesson to all who have the responsibility to guide our athletes''.

And the JAAA added in bold letters, the following: "ALL MUST ABIDE BY THE RULES OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ATHLETICS FEDERATIONS AND THE JAMAICA AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE ANTI-DOPING RULES AND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ATHLETE'S EDUCATION ACCORDINGLY."

Francis also coaches Asafa Powell, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Melaine Walker, Michael Frater, Kaliese Spencer, Anneisha McLaughlin, Sherone Simpson, Shericka Williams and Nesta Carter.
