Not enough vets for a single event, nor enough women for the same. If that was me, vet or not, having a woman give me a start is embarrassing!

How much money for this event?

23 for a combined 120m race? SA get more than that just for the chicks 120m (reynella) and they have a population 20% of NSW???

Why does NSW struggle for athletes, they should have a thousand runners in the pros up there?

Is it not enough coaches?
People don't trust pros?
Not enough promotion?

It's the first full meet of the year and Macksville is a long way from major cities. 6 hours drive from Sydney and 9 hours from Canberra.

NSW has stuggled for numbers in the women's in the past at these meets. Queanbeyan will have much bigger numbers.

Good point Merv, about the fact Macksville is so far away.

Still.....with the population of NSW and in particular the number of athletes involved in athletics in NSW, the numbers are not great.

Even the NSWAL meets closer to Sydney don't seem to attract the numbers you would expect. I think 80 to 100 runners in a Gift and around 40 to 50 in a women's race should be easily achievable.

There seems to be an aversion to distance running in NSWAL ranks. When a middle distance race is scheduled it normally only attracts a single figure number of runners.

I'm not sure what the answer is, as there's a lot of good people doing a lot of work in the NSWAL.

Maybe someone needs to take the bull by the horns and start scheduling Under 17 races at all meets. Even if it only starts off with a handful, eventually it will catch on. It just needs to be persevered with.

The SAAL Under 17 numbers have exploded since they were introduced last season. 33 runners in an Under 17 race (Flinders 200m) augurs well for the future of the sport.

Had a look at Queanbeyan numbers from last year:

Men's gift - 64
Women's gift - 27
70m - 77

Not huge given it's the biggest carnival in NSW. Although a lot of quality runners in that field. Particularly the womens gift and backmarkers race. Breen, Boden, Whaler, Van Veenendahl etc.

The other difference to VAL is that not many interstaters come to NSW even for the big races. Queanbeyan is the same money as Maryborough and Mary is littered with runners from NSW, QLD and SA, while Queanbeyan last year only really had a handfull from JH's stable.

Yeah, whilst the numbers themselves aren't big given the size of the population in NSW, the NSWAL certainly does get some quality backmarkers competing, thanks mainly to quality coaches like Fairweather & Beckenham supporting the meets.
