Trip to Stawell is a great Easter gift

Box Hill runner Emily Bertacco with Little Athletics Victoria
general manager Dean Paulin.

A FAMILY trip to Stawell for the nation’s oldest short distance running race led Emily Bertacco to success.

The 10-year-old from Box Hill won the 400m mixed sprint as part of Little Athletics handicap events at Central Park over the Easter long weekend.

Emily’s father Alan Bertacco said her older brother, Matthew, was set to compete in the Gift.

Matthew is a member of the Australian squad for the junior world championships in Barcelona in June.

“Matthew’s been doing some professional running but had to withdraw from the Gift,” Mr Bertacco said.

“The whole family was going anyway and, with one of our other sons, Damien, competing, Emily decided she might as well enter.”

And lucky she did.

“Emily ran in the 100m and 400m events, winning her 400m heat and going through to the final,” Mr Bertacco said.

“The handicaps were changed for the final and she was moved back a bit further and ran off 75m in the final. She won it with the field bunched up and the back marker was on her heels, but she fended him off.”

For her efforts, Emily collected a coveted Stawell sash, trophy and $400.

“We’re heading to Europe where we’ll also watch Matthew in Barcelona and Emily has decided she would like to spend her prize money in Paris,” Mr Bertacco said.

A student at St Francis Xavier primary school, Emily joined Box Hill Little Athletics Club as an under-six competitor.

She is coached by two-time Australian decathlon champion Steve Cain.
