Gurr - 25 sec through the first 200... was flying
Collingridge looked great in 2nd.

Rowe looked comfortable and the 57 sec first lap assisted Fitzpatricks sprint finish.

Thanks biggiesmalls, appreciate the trackside comments.

AA are slow to update their site - let us know how the women's 100m goes.

Fingers crossed Melissa Breen gets that bloody A qualifier! Her form at Stawell was sensational.

I agree Mex was perfect conditions here tonight so why leave anything in reserve when most likely a massive head wind will pick up tomorrow.
Silly silly girl.

Remarkable that Fitzpatrick has made the 800m final as this was his first 800m for the season.

Stawell 550m win given him confidence?

Good call Biggies.

Nothing better than a couple of solid 550's at Stawell to set you up for the 800m at the nationals. Good work Fitzy.

Ben offereins just ran a very cruisey 48.40 to win heat 1 of the Men's 400m. Andrew Boudrie 2nd.

Very different 400 this year. No Steffensen, no Wroe, no Milburn.
And what's happened to SA's Clay Watkins? Wasn't in the warm up area.

400's heats looked soft, missed the second as I got caught chatting. But it looked about a high 47 run

3rd heat to Kevin Moore in 47.66.

7 Breeana Walker 92 VIC 57.81
8 Emma Zalcman 86 NT 58.70

Straight out final scheduled for 4.30pm on Sunday.

I guess the biggest shock is that Sheena Steinert did not make the final. Sheena was ranked sixth overall, but more importantly was the 3rd ranked athlete of those in the heats with a 53.71 going into the champs.

The top 10 on the 2012 rankings of those who competed at the nationals were:
  • (Those struck out did not compete in the heats)
  • Those in yellow are into the final.

1) 52.68 Caitlin Pincott Q Brisbane 1-Apr
52.70 Pirrenee Steinert N Newcastle 28-Jan
52.77 Tamsyn Manou V Melbourne 3-Mar
2) 53.20 Caitlin Sargent Q Sydney 18-Feb
53.55 Lyndsay Pekin W Sydney 31-Mar
3) 53.71 Sheena Steinert N Newcastle 28-Jan
4) 54.12 Jamie-Lee Starr N Sydney 19-Jan
54.13 Jess Gulli V Canberra 24-Mar
54.66 Morgan Mitchell V Sydney 16-Mar
54.76 Tabitha West V Newcastle 21-Jan
5) 54.78 Steph Mollica V Melbourne 4-Feb
54.83 Abbey de la Motte T Melbourne 3-Mar
6) 54.83 Renee Robson N Sydney 31-Mar
7) 55.15 Catriona Cuddihy (Irl) Sydney 31-Mar
8.) 55.23 Katherine Clarke V Bendigo 14-Jan
55.24 Sarah Carli N Melbourne 25-Feb
55.29 Emily Coppins N Sydney 16-Mar
55.37 Ella Solin W Sydney 16-Mar
9) 55.41 Trudy Davidson Q Brisbane 1-Apr
55.42 Claudia Nicklason T Sydney 16-Mar
10) 55.43 Becky Pile V Canberra 24-Feb

Anneliese Rubie ran 53.16 in Italy in July 2011 while Faye Harding is in the 2001 rankings as fron Great Britain and ran 54.69 in April 2011.

From an Australian 4 x 400m perspective consider the names unavailable through injury or choice - Tamsyn Manou, Jody Henry, Olivia Tauro, Piranne Steinert & Jana Pittman - five sub 53 sec girls.

With so many missing and out of form it makes it the softest national title for a long time. 54secs might win a medal for the 3rd Australian home.

I'm more amazed he was even let in. I was told you had to run a 1:51.5 to qualify, no exceptions. I get the feeling they leave it quite open to who they let in and I just feel like an idiot for not even trying to sign up now. All credit to Simon though, he's a great racer and it looks like the heat went down to the wire where he managed to just outclass a few. Loved watching him win the 550m last weekend.

Any ideas what happened to Andy Giam though? Very up and down results. Ran a 1.56 4 weeks ago, 1.51 2 weeks ago and a 1.57 yesterday in a fairly slow heat. Wouldn't have thought he'd have trouble closing if the first lap was slow.

Andy Giam is a likeable young bloke. He's a very talented 400/800 athlete who at 22 should be at his premium best. He should be a genuine & regular sub 1-50 and sub 48s athlete....... BUT like a few other highly talented SA athletes he has a softness to him and is a sucker to the parasitic losers that attach themselves to him. He has got by on natural talent and runs the odd 1-50/1-51 but when he need to rise up to the occasion he throws up a ridiculous 1-55 plus. And there's been too many of them this season.

He has a 1-49.47 PB from April 2011 but has not broken 1-50 this season.

He frustrates the crap out of me because he is bloody better than 1-57. (He may well be injured and limped to the line - I don't know - but as Running Man said there's a 1-56 only two starts back and several other sub par runs that suggest that the nationals were always going to be a struggle.)

The one good thing is he at least had the character and the guts to turn up at the nationals and face the reality. If he gets stuck into a decent winter prep and works his clacker off and in particular work on his 400m speed to get to the sub 48s range, I'm sure he will get back to where he should be.

Running man I think you will find the qualifying period dates back to Jan 2011, look at the stats I have found a 1.50 for Fitzpatrick in that time.
So he deserves to be in the final

Big run by Mitch Williams-Swain to knock over Aaron Rouge-Serrett in a heat of the men's 100m. Disappointing for Adrian Mott & Liam Gander to miss the final. Should be a very interesting final - includes 3 Stawell Gift winners (4 Stawell Gifts between them). Not sure there have ever been as many as 5 Stawell Gift winners in the heats of the nationals before.

Matt Wiltshire probably finished around where one would think. Overall equal 22nd with Brandon Galic. Galic has run 10.80 this season.

Alex Beck wins 1st semi of the men's 400m. 46.07s.

Steve Solomon wins 2nd semi brilliantly in 46.5, just from Ben Offereins. The big 2 Offereins v Solomon in the 2nd semi, strange semi draw. We've seen the final.

6 Robert McIntyre 91 NSW 48.60
7 Max Waldron 94 TIS 48.75
8 Luke Grimley 91 QLD 49.26

Huge break through by 19 year old Alex Beck - smashed his PB. ALSO Craig Burns in his first proper year of athletics runs 46.50. Maybe the only surprise not to make the final was Joel Bee, after he looked very good at Stawell.

The final is scheduled for 4.37pm on Sunday.
