400m Open
We had three strong heats of the 400m with the first three placegetters making it
through to the final. Heat 1 was a keenly contested affair with Nick Magree, the
Barrie Milligan trained runner edging out Matthew Hargreaves over the concluding
stages. Hanging on for third was week 1 winner Rhys Parkinson, who did well to
qualify off his reduced handicap. The winner's time for the heat was 48.5
Heat 2 was taken out by the John Henry trained Chris Hargreaves in 48.3. Chris
has been a gradual improver over the last couple of weeks and was able to hold
off the ever consistent Lachlan Taylor, who ran on well from his backmark of 14m
and close up was Andrew Wilcox who was having his first run of the series.
Heat 3 was another impressive win by the Todd Ireland trained Glenn Cooper, he
looked the most impressive of the 3 heats and ran a time of 48.2. Shaun
Hargreaves showed some good fight to clinch second over Matthew Kiernan.
The 400m Final was a hotly contested event, once again a quality field was
assembled with a good handicap spread. The backmarker Shaun Hargreaves was
running off 11m and the frontmarker Matthew Kiernan was off 52m. With 100m
to go it came down to the two frontmarkers Glenn Cooper and Matthew Kiernan
who cleared out from the rest of the field. Matthew battled back strongly over the
concluding stages but he was no match for the eventual winner Glenn Cooper
who broke through for his first VAL victory in a very quick time of 46.6. Once
again the three Hargreaves brothers battled out the placings behind the first two
with Nick Magree just off their heals.
Round 3 of the 400m will see the handicaps moved around again for that all
important spot in the final, so it should be another round of interesting running.

1040m Open
The 1040m was run as a straight final. Tom Hecimovic was the frontmarker and
set up a strong pace for the race. Tom led the field up until the turn when Gordon
Muir moved up and took the lead once they headed into the turn. Gordon looked
set for victory until the Les Williams trained, Mark Andrews stamped his authority
on the race with about 100m to go. Mark stormed to victory off his backmark of
40m and won in an impressive time of 2.39. Just off the pace were Greg Hilson
and Ashley Snowden who both ran respectable races to finish 3rd and 4th. Also
close up were Jacob Reed who showed some more improvement along with Greg
Barton who wasn't that far away.
NEXT EVENT
Our next event at Tabcorp Park (Melton Harness) will be round 3 of the 400m and
1040m events to be held on Friday 5th November.
The finals of both events will be non-penalty and will carry prizemoney of $2,000
for each event. If a novice athlete wins a series heat or final he or she will still be
eligible to compete in novice events.

Great post, we need to get more of this style of review after each event.
Well done.
