FLYING: Margaret Gayen (centre) sprints to victory in the
women's 100m at the ASA state championships at Santos
Stadium last Saturday.

EMERGING sprint queen Margaret Gayen announced herself as one of the hottest prospects in South Australian athletics when she won the open women’s 100m at the state championships last weekend.

Gayen, who is just 17 years old, beat Western District’s Alicia Wrench-Doody Australia’s ninth-ranked 100m runner by .06sec on day one of the Saturday-Sunday meeting at Santos Stadium.

Pembroke runner Gayen’s winning time of 12.08sec was .2 seconds slower than her best but was run into 1.1m head wind. Gayen also won the open long jump with a personal best 6.28m leap to beat Australia’s fourth-ranked long jumper, Salisbury’s Chelsea Jaensch (6.1m).

Wrench-Doody turned the tables in the 200m to beat Gayen by .21sec with a slick 24.57sec performance.

Leanne Hodge was third in both sprints.

In the women’s 400m and 800m events, Rosie Kelly continued Pembroke’s good showing when she won both races.

Kelly’s strongest opposition came in the 800m where she ran 2(min).10(sec) to beat Hills Districts runner Paige Graham by a second.

Graham went one better in the women’s 1500m when she blitzed the field with a 4:29 performance, ahead of steeplechaser Tessa Potezny.

On the men’s side, Western Districts sprinter Robbie James showed his class to comfortably beat training partner Jordan Tronnolone in the men’s 100m, with a 10.84sec performance.

But James couldn’t pull off the 200m double after he was comfortably beaten by Flinders’ Wallace Long-Scafidi, who ran 21.79sec.

Port Adelaide’s Brett Fisk produced an excellent 48.86sec 400m run to narrowly beat 800m runners Bryce Watkins and Andy Giam.

Watkins and Giam locked horns again the following day over 800m, with the former producing a gutsy 1:51 effort to win by .4sec. Western Districts’ Harry May ran a personal best time to finish third.

Rhys Jones(Adelaide Harriers) showed the field a clean pair of heels to win the men’s 1500m in 3:52.

One of the highlights of the meeting was an appearance by Melbourne-based South Aussie Alwyn Jones in the triple jump. Jones, who has qualified for the London Olympics, leapt 16.32m to win the event.

In the long jump, Western’s national class performer Tim McGuire leapt 7.29m to comfortably take gold.

Robbie and Wallace win state titles in PB times. Pro coaches and their old fashioned methods cant be too bad?
