There's nothing preventing you offering a contribution on a more regular basis.

And if you looked into the archives you will find dozens of interesting & informative posts. Not too much lately, but I'm sure with the Stawell Gift marks now published we will see a bit more traffic.

Basically this forum can be whatever you want it to be.....

The handicapping system is no good, juts rewards shit running. Run shit for two years and get a 3.25 lift. Tancredi ran 2nd, 12.06 off 8.75 in 2009. Went back to 6. Now has 9.25. Handicapper will have egg on his face if Tancredi wins. Well done to Paul for manipulating a stupid system. I hope he wins and the handicapper is forced to admit he's stuffed up.My tip is the final will have at least 2 past finalists. Mott, Jamieson, Tancredi, Greenough, Tiu.

The Gift is remaining in Vic in 2012.
Dont worry about Smokies from the other states ,if they think its their year ,they are dreaming.
Very good call by Trackstar but not quite sure if hes quite nailed it.

Best of the Vic pro runners are Wiltshire and Marr. Rouge-Serrett a huge chance off that mark and Steffensen should be able to do damage off his peg but doubt that he will.
The usual suspects like S.Hargreaves, Brittain, Tancredi, Greenough will go well but not in the class of Wiltshire or Marr.

What about Liam Dooley? Thrashed them in the heat at Ballarat and would have won the final easily.
Agree with Phantom on Wiltshire.
Tancredi, Dooley & Wiltshire, so far for me.

I'm with you Whispers. Should almost be an all Vic final.
Another year where the South Aussies are just making up the
numbers. Cibich might make a semi if lucky.

my final is out of the following...

Werribee - S. Hargraeves
Ringwood - Greenough + Marr
Ballarat - Dooley (pending on severity of injury) + Wiltshire
Essendon - Tancredi
Geelong - Brittain (again)
QLD - McCabe (although has been shafted in handicaps), Mispelhorn (spelling?)
NSW - Eschebach (spelling?)
SA - Koschade

You can add in 1 or 2 complete random smokies, Collins, ARS (only if recovered from mid season operation) and you have your final 6 from the above list.

If i were to have a crack at deciding the final 6...
ARS
Hargraeves
Greenough
Eschebach
Wiltshire
1x random smokie

You're kidding, right, Trackstar?

Paul copped a fair and just penalty after his second place effort at Stawell, three years ago.

Since then he has competed in 51 carnivals at 100m/120m distance, of which 34 have been since the new 3-tick system was introduced.

Excluding the two Stawell runs, that leaves him with 32 ticks (not an unreasonable assumption), or 10 lifts of a 0.25m increment for 2.5m total.

Amongst those 51 events, he has managed to final only 5 times: Avondale Heights 10/11, Noble Park 10/11, St. Bernards 10/11, Noble Park 11/12 and Bendigo 11/12. None of these finals were for gifts with large prize pools.

He is well and truly off OGA status for the gift distance and entitled to the full Frater 1.0-1.5m lift.

He is also not a young man anymore; the hamstring force generation curve decay is worse at 30 than it is for an athlete of 27.

He has done everything the VAL as a body and we as participants would want from an athlete, and then some. How many other athletes have supported 63 VAL carnivals across the last three years? I'm guessing the list is pretty short.

Your whinging is as insulting as it is stupid.

If Paul manages to win after spending much of the last three years at Gift distance in the wilderness, then he has done well, and I'd argue, so have the handicappers.

The handicap system is entirely about rewarding athletes for regular participation as well as providing clear penalties for those who achieve success. Very few people want a return the bad old days of broad discretionary handicapping where your results depended more on who coached you than what form you were in.

love you armchair experts...Koschade hiding all year?! The muppets are alive and well. I can tell from your post that you have not even spoken to Benny K, at least not this season. Wouldn't surprise me if you have never spoken to him. Doesn't stop the expert opinion though!

The guy doesn't hide. far too much class for that.

You guys are forgetting that the 3rd fastest man in the world has 1m....has been to Stawell before...and won't be slowing down in the last 20m.

That means the winner has to be well under 12 flat.

I think the winner will come from Team Fiedler. Tiu off a huge mark is dangerous, Mott and Jamieson are off decent marks for top flight sprinters and Marr has been ominous at times this season.

Elsewhere, Rouge-Serret can win off his mark if he is in form and Ben "The Dream" Weaver might be a smoky.

It is going to be a very fast gift (weather permitting). Buckle up and enjoy Australia's greatest sporting weekend.

2009 - 42 semi finalists. only 19 entered in 2012. Tancredi meets 10 semi finalists from 2009 better off. Stubbs is one but he won. other 9 ran slower than tancredi in 2009. He only meets 7 worse off. Not criticising Paul at all, the system has him handicapped to 12.00. BUT how many runners have proven they can run under 12.20 off their marks? Not many!
