Sprint doubles decided

By WAYNE MASON
Hobart Mercury
March 26, 2012

ROSS Lovell laid claim to the find of the season tag by adding the 200m to his 100m crown on day three of the Tasmanian Track and Field Championships at the Domain Athletics Centre yesterday.

Lovell, 19, fought off strong challenges from Sandy Bay pair Max Waldron and Jarred Gilroy to win in 22.13sec.

North-West Coast sprinter Morgan Gaffney overcame a hamstring tear on the finish line to also take the sprint double, winning the 200m in 25.28sec from teammate Morgan Whiley and world youth representative Abbey de la Motte.

James Hansen completed a golden double when he backed up from his 1500m victory on Saturday to win the 800m from Grant Page in 1min52.61sec. This was a more commanding performance by Hansen as he took charge at the 200m mark and won comfortably, despite a late rally from Page.

The women's 800m was taken out by Mel Daniels in a season's best 2min09.55sec.

Daniels held out masters athlete Suzy Cole and Eastern Suburbs' youngster Claudia Nicklason.

Josh Harris (Tamar) easily added the 5000m to his 3000m steeple win on Friday evening, recording 14min55.10sec.

The North-West women continued their dominance of the relays by again taking out the 4x400m, while Sandy Bay won the men's 4x400m thanks to a blistering third leg from Max Waldron.

The Tasmanian Masters conducted a successful track and field championship program with Athletics Tasmania at the Domain Athletics Centre at the weekend .

Evergreen sprinter Dan Lemoto warmed up for the Stawell Easter gift with a swift 7.52sec in the M35 60m.
