33 entered in an Under 17 race?

That has to be a record for an U17 pro race anywhere in Australia!

good numbers all round.

Caldow's mark is a tough tight - same as Saliu who won last year and he gives Koschade & Tohl a start. He can't win off 10, look elsewhere.

Tohl to win on his home track.

Caldow would smoke Saliu in a 200m, 100m and 200m is way faster so I would say the mark is fair

Even though the 70 is likely to attract some attention, the 200m is the one we'll focus on this time. Last years winner Alex Saliu will be looking to make it back-to-back wins here, but with a rather ordinary run in the 300 at Port Adelaide, we might give him a miss this year. Caldow, so impressive last race will be looking to make it 2 sashes from the first 2 races this season, and we think he will, but not in the 200m. Look for him to be concentrating on the 70m where his mark has been left relatively untouched following his impressive start to the season.

So, the 2010 Flinders 200m Final in no particular order.

Woodhams
Let me down last week with a dissapointing run in the gift, but look for him to bounce back to some form here. Saliu, Rossouw and Caldow are simply too close to trouble him, and look for him to be flying home. Wont win, but may final.

Tohl
Showed some of the form that won him the Bay Sheffield a few years back, and will be looking to back up last weeks performance with a final showing here. The extra distance will only enhance his chances here, and if ready to go, expect him to be tough to beat. A podium place beckons for Mr Tohl, but what step remains to be seen!!

Koschade
Was a rather surprise packet last week with an impressive run in the gift, and with that sort of performance, it should have him right in the mix here. Will be looking to put a few miserable and injury-plagued seasons behind him and show some of the potential he displayed so early in his career. Dont disregard.

Whittaker
Tipped him last week to perform, and didnt let me down so we'll tip the young man to perform again. Finalled in the 120 and ran well in the 300m so this distance should be right up his alley. Look for him to keep the form going. Around the mark!!

Grimwade
one of the genuine frontmarkers who would realistically like his chances of performing well here. TIpped him last week and ran well, and theres no reason why he cant do the same thing here. Will be hard to chase down, and will have a few people worried if they draw him in their semi.

Richards
A roughie who looks to have 'Future Bay Sheffield Winner' written all over him. Ran well last week, and always gives it his all. Wont won, but may scrape into the final.

Interesting fact, by tipping Woodhams, Whittaker and Richards, that means that half the field for the final may be coming from YGTS, showing they may be tough to beat when the big gifts come around soon.

You are kidding aren't you? I think you might be underestimating Saliu a tad. Alex in best shape would not get 'smoked' by Caldow.

maybe in a year's time....?

Certainly Sharkey, it gives one confidence when you see the sensible spread of marks in the U/17's compared to the recklessness with which the U/17's was handicapped at Flinders in 2009. Caldow was given 17m in his first start and won by nearly 10m. Apparently everyone bar Faulkner knew about Jordan being a beach sprint champion. Jordan would have won off 10m.

In 2009 there were 14 males on marks between 9m and 38m.

In 2010 there's 20 males on marks between 13m and 18m with young, second year runner Hayden Berryman (30m) the only male beyond 18m.

Grimwade is on a pretty good mark and showed form at the PORT.
29m is a pretty good mark for someone who is going okay early

Pie Man got me thinking what YGTS's record was at Flinders. I know we've had a few 200m finalists and a couple of wins. Discovered we've had 13 finalists overall and missed having a finalist once, in 2006.

YGTS
1st: 2
2nd: 3
3rd: 4
4th: 3
5th: 0
6th: 1

Reynella has won 2 of the last 4 and had a few finalists also.

Last Flinders based athlete to win was Duncan Tippins in 2002.

70m OPEN FINAL PREDICTION

Caldow
Will be hard to catch if he gets away early.

Whitaker
Will give Caldow something to chase and might just have to much class.

Gross
Did not set the world on fire at Port Adelaide but expect him to perform on his home track.

Tohl
Know's what its all about, however will need to get out ahead of the likes of Caldow and Whitaker because he will not chase them down over this distance.

Grimwade
Early frontmaker in form at the moment. Will be hard to catch.

James
Fastest man in the state over this distance on his day. Has done damage at this track before and wouldn't be suprised if he got up for a place here.

Others that might push for a Final spot include Dartnall, Palmer, Richards and Koschade

70m Open FINAL
1. Casey Whitaker (5.50)
2. Ali Saliu (12.00)
3. Shane Grimwade (10.50)
4. Brett Richards (4.75)
5. David Gross (6.75)
6. Neil Thomas (7.50)
Time: 7.74

For a first up 70 of the year, good picks Marvolo.
3 in 70 final including 1st and 3rd.
Also picked Richards as a finalist of others.

Caldow not quick enough early for a 70 off 4.75.
James looked good but 3.25 too tight.
Tohl won heat but just missed in semi.
Koschade unlucky. He looked like he got through but was given 4th in heat.
Dartnall scratched from 70 to concentrate on 200. Must of been confident, but couldn't run out the 200.
Palmer beat in semi.
