LAUNCESTON'S Ross Lovell continued his stellar rise up the ranks of the state's sprinters when he won the 120m Gift at Richmond yesterday.

After only taking up the sport midway through 2011, Lovell has become one of the quickest men in Tasmania.

On Saturday at the Briggs Athletics Classic, he set new personal bests of 11.08sec in the 100m and 22.02 in the 200m.

"It was great racing those quick guys on Saturday night," Lovell said.

"After this big weekend, I'm excited for what might happen the rest of the year now."

He will now head into the business end of the season and challenge for the state title next month.

Lovell was also fresh off the 70m/120m double at St Helens just two weeks ago.

Kimberley Bush won the women's sprint double.

The Hobart runner began the day by taking the 70m, before storming home in the big one over 120m.

Devonport's James Plapp had a strong run to take the open mile, holding off a fast finish from in-form Launceston duo James Hansen and Josh Harris.

Team ATIS athlete Darcey Lahey made it two wins in a row over 400m, adding the Richmond title to his win in St Helens last month.

Meanwhile, Michelle Davis finished her TAL season on a high, winning the women's 400m, her 12th win for the year.

Davis had a dream season, which saw her being named the TAL Female Sprinter of the Year at a celebration held after yesterday's carnival.

Andrew Robinson continued his rise up the ranks to be named Male Sprinter of the Year, while North-West Coast beanpole Alec Thomas was announced as the Distance Runner of the Year.

Yesterday's carnival organiser Ray Quarrell was awarded TAL Trainer of the Year.
