WINNER: David Palmer (grey) crossing the
line first in the 2011 Camden Classic
ahead of Bryce Watkins (white) and Kostya
Khudoshin (green).

THE second largest field in Messenger Community News Camden Classic history will assemble this Sunday.

More than 329 runners will compete at the carnival with more than 40 contesting the feature 400m race.

In its 33rd year, the Camden Classic is the state’s richest one-lap foot race and is considered the most prestigious long sprint in local athletics.

Three past winners are among entries - 2011 winner David Palmer, Camden-based hopeful Matthew Cousins and Matthew Hargreaves.

The $5000 race has also attracted Bay Sheffield 550m winner Bryce Watkins, one of the state’s leading 800m runners.

Alex Bubner, who is coming off a 300m win at last weekend’s Marion Athletics Carnival, is among the favourites to take out the race.

A strong list of runners will also assemble for the 400m Women’s Classic.

Flinders Athletics club’s Claire Ashman is among the favourites with former Port Adelaide sprinter Katherine Robb and Zoe Steele.

The carnival also features an open 1600m race and 120m sprints for men and women.

Reigning back-to-back Bay Sheffield champion Jordan Caldow has entered the 120m and will also run in the 50m skins race.

The under-20 120m Gift has attracted such a large field that six heats will be required, and semi finals have been scheduled.

The 400m SANFL Umpires Race is back, along with the 400m Footballers Classic, which will feature PHOS-Camden and Sacred Heart Old Collegians players.

The action starts from noon at Camden Oval, Anzac Highway, with the heats of the Classic scheduled to begin just after 3pm.
