"Let's Go While We're Young"

Weather in Adelaide tomorrow (Saturday) is expected to reach a high of 35 degrees and a low of 20. Forecast of a possible thunderstorm, but hopefully it comes late in the night, after the meet has finished.

Wind is expected to be a south-easterly which is a head wind for the sprints in the main straight. I have heard that if there are head winds for the sprints, there is a good chance they will be conducted down the back straight to take advantage of a tail wind.

I guess we can assume the electronic timing has been well & truly fixed & tested so we don't have a repeat of last Friday night.

With Sally Pearson running 11.25 in Brisbane a fortnight ago, I can see a seriously fast time and a possible Australian record, if she gets to run down the back straight.

Hopefully there's a big crowd in attendance tomorrow, ASA have worked extremely hard to bring this event to Adelaide, we just need a great atmosphere and some exciting competition to make it well worth being a permanent part of the SA athletics calendar.

"Let's Go While We're Young"

Chris Wainwright, an athletics enthusiast who often provides the profiles and write ups on Runners Tribe has offered a few previews of some of the races at the Adelaide Track Classic. Below is Chris's write up on the Women's 100m.

Sally Pearson (QLD)

Age: 25

PB: 11.14 (2007)

2012 Best - 11.25

2011 Best - 11.20

2010 Best - 11.28

Melissa Breen (ACT)

Age: 21

PB: 11.33s - 2008

2012 Best - 11.44s

2011 Best - 11.40s

2010 - Best 11.34s

Facts and Stats

  • Breen has never defeated Pearson over the 100m, although did come within 0.01sec at the 2010 Sydney Track Classic (11.39s vs. 11.40s).

  • One of the fastest 100m recorded in Adelaide was produced by current Australian record holder, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, who ran 11.40s in 1998.

  • Pearson has only run in Adelaide once, recording a moderate 11.76s way back in 2006. Breen has never competed in Adelaide.

  • Breen's fastest time outside of Canberra was her 11.38s performance in Japan in 2010.

  • Pearson's best performance in the 100m at a major international meeting came at the 2007 World Championships, where she managed to place 8th in her semi final. Breen made the semi finals of the 2008 World Juniors - placing 3rd.

It would be difficult to see Breen upset Pearson over the 100m, although if Pearson is to break 11.20s then you would expect Breen to be around the 11.35s-11.40s mark - which is just outside her PB set back in 2008 of 11.33s. Last year there was talk of Pearson breaking the long standing National record in the 100m, and if the weather remains hot in Adelaide then maybe the 11.12s record is within sight for Pearson.

For more previews by Chris Wainwright see the Runners Tribe website 'HERE'.
