So who will win the first Gift? Saliu must be a huge chance off 7.5.

Saliu should win but isnt stupid to take it. Good to see heaps of runners in the gift, will be interesting to see how the novice's go. I reckon Dartnall will take out the first one, and maybe gross there, but he might wait aswell!!!

I looked at last years results and saw Dartnel won several races. and he's stil on 10.5. How come I have to give him 3.5 start?

5 Re: Port Adelaide marks on Thu Oct 14, 2010 11:42 am

guess

If you've got to give 3.5 then you have the novice mark. As a long time competitor he is an established athlete.I would assume the handicapper would want to see you before any better was given.Maybe you might be a gun and shouldn't even have 7.

New Guy - that's pro running, you gotta start of the novice mark. Dartnall has been running pros for years, and they have found (over time) that is the mark he is competative off, and then dartnall has worked hard to utulise this mark over recent years. So if you're concerned by this, compete for as long as dartnall has, then re ask the question then why his mark is the way it is! If you also need a mark like his, you will have to keep competing to the best of you ability, and the handicapper will treat you fairly.

PS: Dartnall has never won a massive gift either, and probably won't be pulled too until he does. Unless he wins lots of smaller gifts. This goes for anyone else aswell

You don't have to start off the novice mark. In fact I know of one young athlete competing in his first open Gift this week that will be starting on more than 8.0m. This lad did run some Under 20 races last year so has some history in the sport and (I guess) based on that, will not be starting from 7.0m. BUT if it is your very first start with the League then it's likely you would start with the novice mark.

Dartnall was fortunate to get out to 10.75 by February (Loxton 2004) in his first season at the age of 17 and (from memory) is entering his eighth season. The Loxton Under 20's was cancelled that year so the few U/20's entries the SAAL had were elevated to the Gift. Trevor May (then SAAL sprint handicapper) decided to give them a competitive Gift mark so put a few on 10.m plus. I know Damian Tohl was another who benefited from this and has of course since won the Bay Sheffield.

Being a raw 17 year old at the time Dartnall was barely competitive off the mark so he was allowed to keep it for the next season. He made the 2005 Loxton Gift final in his second season off 10.75 and after winning the Glenelg Gift as a 19 year old in his third season off 10.75 went back to 10.25 at Loxton where he made the final again.

After regularly running without any real Gift success for the next few years he was lifted back out to the 11.0m range and has basically hovered around the mark since. Dartnall runs at every meet so there's ample evidence of what mark he needs.

He won the Flagstaff Hill Gift in April off 11.0m, (and a few other non Gift races in 2009/2010) so in essence, 10.50 is about right for him.

If 'New Guy' is still running in 8 years time and hasn't had much success over the Gift distance, then
he too will probably get out to 10.5m or more.

I see Saliu has been re-adjusted back to 6.75m. Seems only fair. Youngy, do you have any information on any of these youngsters off the novice mark, ive got no idea who they are!!

Of those on 7.0m the following 9 runners will making their debut with the sport.

Nickolas Berry 7.00 m
James Cibich 7.00 m
Jesse Cordoma 7.00 m
Jakson Messent 7.00 m
Aaron Neale 7.00 m
Liam Pearce 7.00 m
Bray Rafanelli 7.00 m
Tjimarri Sanderson-Milera 7.00 m
Liam Wright 7.00 m

Four of the above are entered for the Under 17's 300m -
Jesse Cordoma 20.00m
Jakson Messent 20.00m
Bray Rafanelli 20.00m
Liam Wright 20.00m

I don't know any of the above. They haven't run with the SAAL or ASA before. I know John Turner has a squad at Hectorville and I'm guessing some of them might be with JT.

The fact they are all starting on 7.0 in the Gift suggests the handicapper has no form on them at all.

Terrific for the sport to see that many new athletes lining up at the first meet.

Don't be surprised if Timmy Johnson is in the mix. He's been looking sharp in training. Koschade won't be far behind Johnson who hes training with. Thomson should be up there after a winter in Adelaide.

1. Johnson
2. Thomson
3. Koschade

Dark horse, Paul Taylor off 11.25. good mark for him.

Tohl has to be in the mix, he has to start trying again soon, surely? He won the bay a few years ago, even if he hasn't improved, it has to still put him in front of a lot of people

Heres my tips for the gift even though the 300 novice looks like it could be a cracker.

120 Metre Gift Final
In no particular order!!

Dartnall
Always up an about early in the season and isnt afraid of giving it a crack. Impressive season last year, and will look to continue it here. Fancy him to be around the podium.

Whittaker
Havent seen much of this young lad lately but his santos efforts should put him there abouts for this. Weakened field, and with the bigger guns either not entered or disinterested, should run well.

Caldow
An impressive youngster who isnt afraid to show the handicapper what hes got. Quick off the mark, and should continue on from his impressive season last year and make this final.

Woodhams
The backmarker of the field, will need a good start to catch some of the boys in this field, but hes not the backmarker for no reason. Stawell Gift Runner Up will be flying home, and if fit, expect him to be in amongst it here. Might be more focussed on the 300 Noivce though.

Tohl
Bay Sheffield winner of a few years ago didnt do much last year over the gift distance, but with a solid pre-season, expect him to blow out a few cobwebs here and make the final. Dont think he wim, or want to for that matter, but will want a gauge of where hes at.

Grimwade
Always gives it his all, and with his mark, will be difficult to chase down for many of these new boys. Might scrape in for the final.
