SAW the photo below on Matt Beckenham's website and it occurred to me how prominent the word "HANDICAP" appears on the sash.

Given that every race at a professional running meet is a handicapped event, I don't understand why clubs order sashes with the word Handicap enscribed on the sash. There's no need for it.

Why not have the club's & sponsor's name and just call it the "70 Metres Open" and then the date.

EG:
Wangaratta Athletic Club
(Sponsor's Name)
70 Metres Open Winner
30th January 2011

To the uninitiated, the word handicap throws up connotations that the athlete must carry a physical handicap to be in the event.

I know the SAAL did way with the word Handicap on its sashes about a decade ago.

All clubs and leagues should do away with the word Handicap on sashes.

Totally agree Youngy. I am not sure how many of my sashes say handicap on them, but I know my Stawell one does and i do get the occassional question from time to time...about what my disability is.

Handicap on a sash is an outdated tradition we don't need. Wangaratta and others should get rid of it.
Lots of kids in the sport now, I think parents who see their kid winning a junior race wouldn't like to see handicap on the kid's sash.
