Australians set record for fastest stiletto race
The Associated Press

SYDNEY — Four Australian women have nabbed the world record for the fastest relay race in stiletto heels.

The quartet from the Australian capital of Canberra completed a 300-foot (100-meter) course near Sydney's Opera House in about one minute and four seconds on Tuesday - while wearing 3-inch (7.5 centimeter) stilettos.

A record keeper from Guinness World Records confirmed the women had set the record and presented them with a certificate.

The women - known as the Pinkettes - say they plan to use their 10,000 Australian dollar ($9,600) prize for a trip to Thailand.

About 100 women - and one man - competed in the race, which helped raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

In just over one minute and four seconds, four girls from Canberra have set a new world record for the fastest relay race in stiletto heels.

The Pinkettes, as they are known, were a shoe-in from the start with all four of them being Australian Institute of Sport students.

Organisers say the leggy quartet - Brittney McGlone, Laura Juliff, Casey Hodges and Jessica Penny - smashed the 100 or so other competitors down the 80-metre course.

McGlone, a hurdling champion, also placed first in the same race in 2008.

She says the secret to running in heels measuring at least 7.5 centimetres is to get up on your toes.

"Don't tell the other girls that!" she joked before today's race, held in the shadow of the Opera House at Sydney's Circular Quay.

The Pinkettes were presented with a certificate by record keeper Guinness confirming they had set the world record for the fastest stiletto relay race.

The girls plan to use their $10,000 prize for a well-earned holiday in Phuket, Thailand.

A cheque for $20,000 was also presented to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
