Survivor of freak surfboat accident wins Cowra Gift

Cowra Community News
Tueday 13 December 2011

THE winner of the 2011 Essential Energy Cowra Gift, Elliot Marynisson broke his back while competing at the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships in 2008 when, after being flung through the air, he landed heavily on his back fracturing a vertebrae.

“We got hit by a wave and my back slammed against the boat,” Marynissen told CCN after his win on Saturday.

“As a result I couldn’t do any more contact sport. It had to be all low impact stuff. It was a pretty tough time. But once I recovered I wanted to stay involved with the club so I switched to running.”

Last summer saw the young sprinter move up to the open division where he started his summer with the sprint and flags double at the East Coast carnival at Dixon Park Beach. It’s form he has transferred into this summer’s professional running season .

In an interview with CCN editor Garry Starr Marynissen says while he misses the surf boat competition he quite happy with the change to running especially after pocketing $2000 for Saturday's effort.

The university student who is studying business and marketing at the Australian Catholic University in North Sydney says the prize money will be very handy in getting through the summer break.

In the interview he says it was daunting at the start of the race as all of the other runners started in front of him. To hear Marynissen describe the race step by step click on the PLAY icon ► on the website below.
