Record numbers for Bay Sheffield

by Jane Whitford
Guardian messenger
7 Dec 2011

THIS year’s Bay Sheffield Carnival is set to be the biggest yet, with a record breaking 838 entrants taking part in the two-day event.

With nominations for some races still open, SA Athletics League president Brendan Golden said the event had already eclipsed its previous record of 748 entrants across the 20 races.

“In 125 years we have cracked 700 nominations just four times so to get 838 entries and still be going is pretty amazing,” Mr Golden said.

He said a record $70,000 prize money on offer and a new event - the Messenger Junior Bay Sheffield - had helped boost the number of runners taking part in the 125th Bay Sheffield.

“The prizemoney has definitely had an impact but it’s also the 125th year so people really want to be a part of the occasion,” he said.

“But foremost it’s about the quality of the field - we’ve got a lot of runners from Victoria and New South Wales taking part this year because it’s two days of quality racing for them.”

More than 40 of the state’s brightest young athletes will also take part in the inaugural Messenger Junior Bay Sheffield race, including seven runners from Camden Athletic Club.

Mr Golden was pleased with the number of entrants in the 120m sprint event for under-18s.

“It’s a fantastic result for a first-time event and you can see from the list of entrants that the quality of the field is very strong and pretty much all of the state’s best juniors are taking part.

“We will also put the race at the pointy end of the carnival so it will be run very close to the main race which means the kids will race in front of about 10,000 people ... It’s a fantastic opportunity.”

Meantime, Mr Golden said a new beer, food and wine festival would be held for the first time during the Bay Sheffield to further enhance the event’s “festival atmosphere.”

Marquees will be set up in the south-east corner of Colley Reserve and feature a bar and three restaurants from the Glenelg Pier Hotel as well as big screen TV’s to watch the Bay Sheffield and Boxing Day Test Match.

“We hope it will introduce new people to the Bay Sheff,” Mr Golden said.

The Bay Sheffield will be held from Tuesday, December 27, at noon, to Wednesday, December 28.
