Rain, rain stay away.....especially next Saturday
Cowra Community News
Tuesday 6th Dec 2011

DISTRICT farmers are not the only locals hoping that the recent unsettled weather stays away for a while. Organisers of the second annual Cowra Gift athletics meet are hoping they will score a clear day as well for next Saturday's big event.

The first attempt to hold the event last year on December 4 last year was thwarted by similar to that experienced in Cowra over the last two weeks including almost 60mm only a week before the event.

Two local entrants will compete in the main events. Tom Sharky who won the first event of last year's meeting in fine style only to break down in the later semi finals will appear again with more good fortune than he experienced last year. Seasoned competitor and this year's Miss Cowra Showgirl Brooke White will also dust off her spikes although with a limited preparation.

The 2011 event on December 10 will start with the 70m heats which are scheduled to get underway shortly after midday, with the finals expected to be wrapped up around 4:45pm.

Chief organiser Mr White says he is particularly pleased that all of the event’s sponsors (pictured right) have remained loyal including major sponsor Essential Energy.

“Essential Energy is a valued part of the community, so it’s fantastic they can support local events such as the Cowra Gift,” says Mr White.

A spokesman for Essential says:“Essential Energy is proud to support this second holding of the event by sponsoring the Cowra Gift Men’s 120m race.

“The event is a fantastic example of how Essential Energy continues to support local organisations within the community.

“I think that everyone will agree that the Cowra Gift is a great initiative and we look forward to seeing the concept evolve over the years with the support of the local community.

Other event sponsors include Cowra Shire Council, Cowra Services Club, Cowra Bowling Club and Beecher Wool Services, Beechwood Homes and Central West Lucerne Products

A new event this year which has attracted a lot of interest is the Gym Challenge which is open to members of the Cowra Health Club. The major prize for winning this event will be bragging rights which can be used the next time the winner attends the gym.

NEWS FROM THE NSWAL

2. COWRA GIFT CARNIVAL 2011.
Saturday 10 December 2011.

Continuing a trend at these country meetings entries are again most disappointing and NSWAL officials are once more left wondering whether all the (voluntary) work that they perform is worth it when indications seem to be that NSW runners and trainers really don't want a professional athletic league. Moreover, local officials who work for months securing sponsorship for these carnivals will not persevere when there is minimal support shown by the potential beneficiaries of their endeavours. This is a big reason why carnivals disappear from the Calendar.

There will be a special Newsletter on this matter in the new year.

Losing this would be a major blow to the NSWAL schedule.
