Jana Pittman makes surprise appearance at local meet

by: Scott Gullan
From:Herald Sun
November 29, 2011

TWO-TIME world 400m hurdles champion Jana Pittman has taken the first step in her comeback for the London Olympics, anchoring a club relay team.

Pittman made a surprise appearance at the Victorian relay championships on Sunday, representing Glen Huntly in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m events.

Her first appearance on the track since April was a welcome sight for Athletics Australia, which is banking on her star power to be a major factor at next year's Olympics.

The 29-year-old has been in the wilderness since missing the 2008 Olympics because of injury.

Pittman anchored Glen Huntly in the 4 x 400m heats, with the team qualifying fastest in 3min 49.09sec. The final is on December 10.

Pittman also ran in the heat and final of the 4 x 100m.

"I'm feeling positive and loving athletics," she said.

Men 4x400 Metres Relay Open
1 QEII Track Club 3:18.56
2 University of Queensland 3:20.08
3 Maroochy 3:23.64
4 Pacific 3:29.27
5 Gold Coast Victory 3:34.28
6 Composite Team 3:36.56
7 University of Queensland 3:43.95
8 Thompson Estate 3:54.05

Not a lot of 4x100m depth in Queensland, comparative to NSW. Still - a decent time by QEII Track Club of 41.91.

I reckon AA should work with the member associations and have the state relay titles on the same day in each state. Maybe the last Saturday in November? All the results could be collated and AA could offer prizemoney to the three fastest times in the country in the Olympic Relay events (4x100 & 4 x 400). Say $800 & $100 trophy, $400 & $200 for each of the men's & women's relays. ($6,000 all up)

The prizemoney would be a great incentive for clubs to have a serious crack at winning its state title as well as being crowned the best 'relay' club in Australia.

This would also enhance the relay culture in Australia and get athletes & coaches taking the relays more seriously.

Australia should always be represnted in Men's & Women's 4 x 100m & 4 x 400m at major championships and if we started developing a strong relay culture at the club & state level it will filter through to the senior level. We would have athletes keener to develop baton changing skills.

AA wants quality relay runners but it needs to offer an incentive for sprinters to stay in the sport and take the relays seriously.

A national relay competition based on state championships would be an exciting addition to the calendar and AA has to do very little other than offer the incentive and wait for the results from around the country to come in!
