de la Motte wraps up gift ATHLETICS

LAUNCESTON runner Abbey de la Motte won the Launceston Athletic Carnival's 100-metre women's gift at the St Leonards Athletic Centre yesterday.

Running off a handicap mark of 6m, de la Motte's winning time was 11.66 seconds.

Acacia Hills runner Carmen Oakley (8.25m) finished second with Hobart's Michelle Davis third (9.25m).

The 200m men's gift went to Launceston's Callum James running off 17m, in a time of 21.05.

Launceston's Andrew Robinson (13m) was second with Cooee's Brendan Smart (23m) third.

Smart took out the 100m final in 10.61, off 10m, ahead of Robinson (6.50m) and Launceston's Ross Lovell (6m).

The men's 1000m final went to North-West Coast runner Alec Thomas with Launceston's James Hansen second and Burnie's James Plapp third.

Plapp won the 2000m handicap and the 300m masters.

After her third in the women's gift, Davis won the women's 600m handicap final off a mark of 44m.

Launceston (Western Suburbs) runners in Courtney Stanley and Tiffany Henricks finished second and third.

The 200m maiden was won by Hobart's Clara Staples from the North- West's Chloe Marquis and Launceston's Georgia Axton.

LAC secretary Helen Moir described the 23rd annual carnival as a good day with numbers up thanks to lots of new, young runners.
