ABERFOYLE Park runner Jessica Oates will be among those competing for the state’s newest athletics title - the Messenger Junior Bay Sheffield.

SA Athletics League president Brendan Golden said the new under-18 event would coincide with the Bay Sheffield’s 125th anniversary.

For Oates, 14, of Flinders Athletics Club, it will be her first Bay Sheffield. She began training as a middle and long-distance runner in 2005.

“I’m hoping I’ll do well as there is a lot of tough competition, especially as a lot of the competitors will be older than me,” she says.

Mr Golden hoped about 60 of the state’s brightest young athletes would sign up to compete in the 120m sprint event.

“We already have under-14 and under-17 races, but we hope this will become the pinnacle junior race for the SA Athletics League and that young runners from all over will aspire to one day win the Junior Bay Sheff,” he said.

The two-day Bay Sheffield Carnival will be held at Colley Reserve, Glenelg, on December 27 and 28.

The 2nd year running of 120m Junior Sprint event is on its own being very unique race in S.A. This race can be run and won by an athlete as young as 14 and to give a 14 year old male or female the opportunity to run at the Bay -Sheff in front of thousands of people is such a good initiative by the SAAL.It does have the potential to draw huge nominations in the future and can only be a good thing for the enhancement of Open Athletics in S.A. Thats my view.

Kirsty Taylor gave coach G.T. the most amazing result in the Under 14 Junior Bay Sheff in 2012!
