Not a lot of highlights so far this year at SANTOS in the three interclubs conducted to date - certainly those of a national or elite level standard.

Yesterday (12/11) Jordan Caldow made his ASA debut in an interclub competition, winning the 'A Grade' heat of the 100m by 2m in a handy 10.89.

Later in the day, Western District won a depleted 4 x 100m relay competition by over 50m in 41.98 - the fastest time by any club in Australia this calendar year. The team consisted of top grade long jumper Tim McGuire and three SAAL athletes in Caldow, Robbie James & Dale Woodhams.

Clubs in SA rarely go under 42secs due to the scarcity of four A grade sprinters in any one SA club at the same time. The only previous times in the last decade, I can think of are:

  • 41.30 by Westerns in January 2010 (fastest 'club based' time on the national rankings in 2010)

  • 41.78 by Westerns in 2007 beating Tea Tree Gully (a team including Mark Ormrod & Todd Bateman) who ran 41.99.

So to rock up at the opening 4 x 100m relay of the season and run sub 42s is a very good result.

Both NSW and Victoria will conduct their state relay championships later this month, so will be interesting how many teams go under 42secs.

Brilliant time by Illawong to win the ANSW 4 x 100m state relay title - smashing 41secs. I thought a few clubs would run inside 42secs, but not six. Just goes to show the depth of the NSW clubs.

Western District (SA) were the number one ranked club for a week - now we're seventh!

Victorian Relay Results. No team broke 43secs.

Vic clubs seem a fair way behind NSW clubs in terms of depth of sprinters in the club system.

Major issue with Victorian sprinters is actually getting them to compete. If you have a look at the current Vic 100m rankings, only 2 of the top 16 ranked athletes actually competed for their respective clubs. Very poor effort!
