Noticed the removal of semi finals from the open 200m. I can't recall every Flinders meet but I'm fairly certain there have traditionally been semi finals for the 200m.

The removal of the semis puts a greater onus on the handicapper to seed the heats to ensure there are no stacked or easy heats. A task that is more difficult for a 200m than say a 120m or 400m event as it is a unique distance in the SAAL and there's little 200m form to draw on.

The last two years, the final has contained two athletes who met in the heat, but were then split for the semis and made the final.

I guess the addition of Under 17 and Under 14 races in recent years has meant that cuts had to be made elsewhere to keep the program down to about 4½ hours.

The heats should be pretty interesting & 'cut throat' with only heat winners going through.
(At least I get to use less video tape. Smile )

In all honesty apart from time i can't find a positive for not having semis!
I can see the point about having a tough heat and it will seperate the boys and the men but really would semis hurt? so the carnival runs and extra 30mins!!!!

Good number in the 2 mile, should be a ripper.
19 noms in the 800 and 19 noms in the 3200., rare to see same number in the 2 lap and 8 lap races.

How about a poll for the distance events, 800 or 3200??

Last couple of seasons have seen the 200m event being moved so the finish is on the far side of the oval because of indifferent track conditions on the top bend.
Just wondering how it looks this weekend
If not any good ,has any thought been given to running a straight 200m and using the same finishing gates as the 70m.Theres plenty of lawn area down towards the hospital end so it could be done.
Imagine having a straight 200m ,it would be pretty unique and maybe the first to run one.
With the right promotion and a little bit of extra prizemoney it could really rise in status.
What does everyone else think

Western District Athletic Club conducted a meet at Ellis Park in the 1990's where the main event was a straight 200m. I wasn't present but I believe it may have been an amateur based meet. And from what I can vaguely remember from the person who told me about it, Steve Hutton won the straight 200m.

At Flinders, running the 200m down the back straight definitely assists the frontmarkers as it is slightly down hill and the last two years has seen a tail wind.

From what I have been told the outer track has been moved slightly south so the 200m will run the traditional way and not be impaired by the bend.

If it is run the way it use to with the finish in the front straight, the backmarkers have a better chance, up hill and a head wind.
