Well what a difference a week makes here in Victoria. Last week we had warm balmy conditions with a good tail breeze for the 400m event and tonight it was quite cool after a day that had plenty of rain during most of it.

Lucky for the 400m runners, they still had a tail breeze and the three heats were contested in earnest. First three places in each heat qualified for the final and there was no shortage of runners vying for those finals spots. It was good to see some of the "Henry Stable" back from Rob Garland's wedding in Thailand adding something extra to the fields.

Heat 1 was won by the McGarity trained Dominic Hoskins (14m) from Tarryn Fisher (75) & Chris Hargreaves (15m) filling the important third spot.

In Heat 2, the winner there was Shaun Hargreaves (3m), Dennis "Shuffler" Hughes (80m) was second and Matthew Callard (18m)was third.

Heat 3 saw Rhys Parkinson (27m) win narrowly over Rob Vidler (14m) and Clinton Gray (20m) third.

While these athletes were resting, the 1040m event took place with a good field of 11 athletes lining up for the "one lap dash".

Tom Hecimovic (135m) surged to the lead after 150m and was looking good but the guys behind him were not going to let him have it all on his own. A number of challengers came and went but half way up the finishing straight, Greg Hilson (110m) made his move and surged to the front and held off Tom with the young John Jo Wilson (120m) claiming third. Well done to Greg.

With the "Henry boys" filling 2/3rds of the final of the 400m event, you knew that there was going to be some quality running coming from the backmarkers of this field. A big gap from Parkinson (27m) to Tarryn Fisher (75m) looked daunting from where I was standing.

Denis Hughes led off with Tarryn quickly heading to the lead and with Rob Vidler going like a "cut kat" at the start, anything could happen and it did.

The race over the last 30m could have been anyone's with Tarryn still holding the lead and moves from the backmarkers coming thick and fast. In the end it was the usual late run from Dominic Hoskins who saluted the judge, Tarryn Fisher hanging onto second place and Chris Hargreaves filling the third position.

All in all, another good night at the trots with congrats to Dominic & his connections and with just one more week to go to qualify before the final in two weeks time. If you have not entered as yet, best get a move on. Great money to be had in the finals.
