Record prize money for Bay Sheffield

LANDMARK RACE: SA Athletics League president Brendan Golden.

THE 125th Bay Sheffield will be the richest in history, with record prize money of nearly $70,000 and an expected surge in entries.

SA Athletics League president Brendan Golden said he hoped the boost in the prize kitty - from $40,400 the previous year - would see a surge in interest around Adelaide’s most prestigious foot race.

“Last year we had a record of 746 athletes,” Mr Golden said.

“This year is a landmark year and I would like us to beat last year’s total.”

More than 30,000 people are expected to flock to Colley Reserve for the two-day carnival in December, which will be sponsored by the Guardian Messenger.

Guardian Messenger co-editor Andrew Spence said the community media group was proud to be associated with the Bay Sheffield.

“It’s just a great thing for the Bay, our community, our traders and for promoting an active lifestyle over summer,” he said.

“I know we’re parochial, but it’s pretty special to know that Glenelg is the home of such a spectacular, popular and historic event.”

Mr Golden said he hoped regular top athletes would attend the carnival, including Olympian Tamsyn Lewis and the event’s youngest-ever winner Todd Bateman.

“Once the athletes come and see the quality of the event, they always come back,” he said.

Mr Golden said the impact would be felt well beyond Colley Reserve.

“The economic footprint of the Bay Sheffield in the Glenelg area is well in excess of $1 million,” he said.

“It enormously increases trade for businesses in the area.”

Jetty Rd Mainstreet Management Committee chairman Bruce Grindlay agreed, saying traders welcomed the carnival.

“It is definitely one of our busiest days of the year and is an iconic event for Glenelg,” Mr Grindlay said.

Mr Golden said the event had gone from strength-to-strength each year, particularly at junior level where under-14s and 17s races have been introduced.

The prize money for this year’s feature race will be $30,000 up from $18,000 in 2010, and the Women’s 120m prize money has doubled from $5000.

The Bay Sheffield will be held from Tuesday, December 27 at 12pm, to Wednesday December 28, 12pm.

So If prizemoney is up to $30,000, what can we expect the breakdown to look like?? Are we likely to see a $20,000 Winners Cheque??
