The North Queensland athletic season runs from April to September as it is far more conducive to athletics than the summer months. The average temps through winter is 26 degrees with little rain, however the summer months bring the wet season and humidity levels in the high 90s.

I lived in Cairns for 5 years in the 90s with the climate and outdoor lifestyle providing a strong sporting culture in north queensland, especially amongst the juniors. I was taken aback by the amazing potential amongst the youngsters. The area has actually provided quite a few quality athletes with the likes of Paul Dibella in the sprints and Tim Parravacini in the Long Jump. Also triathlete Brad Bevan and heaps of rugby and AFL players.

Cameron Clayton is the NQ Athletics Development Manager and is doing a great job developing the sport in the region. As an ex Melbourne lad he also is a regular visitor to the VAL and is a decent middle distance athlete and won over 1600 last season. He also brought Vanuato athlete Arnold Sorinas to Stawell with him this year, who was a revelation with a 2nd in the backies 400 and a finalist in the 800 from back marks.

For those athletes contemplating a "summer break" in their winter training for next year I can thoroughly recommend Cairns or Townsville as great options for a few weeks. Both have tartan tracks and plenty of good trails and grass reserves for training options. You may also be able to get in a track race if that is what you are looking for.

A few of these guys would add depth to the Bay Sheffield.
Is there any attempt to get them down here?

10.57 for 100 yards is not that quick. These guys would need marks around 10m to be competitive. Doesn't add to the depth, just the numbers.
