Australia Post delivers for the Gift until 2013

The Stawell Athletic Club and the Hon Hugh Delahunty, Minister for Sport and Recreation, today announced that Australia Post will renew their naming rights sponsorship of the nation’s most famous and richest footrace for the next two years.

Commencing back in 1995, the Australia Post partnership with the Stawell Athletic Club will now extend to 19 editions of the Australia Post Stawell Gift.

“The support of sponsors such as Australia Post is crucial to ensuring that iconic Australian events including the Stawell Gift can continue to survive and thrive in a very competitive market,” said Minister Delahunty.

“Along with the Victorian Government’s election pledge to provide funding through to 2015, it is fantastic that the Stawell Athletic Club can now embark on long term projects which would otherwise not have been possible:”

“This includes attracting Australia’s best athletes and international stars such as Kim Collins and Collins Cheboi who thrilled crowds at this year’s carnival.

“Kim has already expressed his keenness to return to Central Park next year and discussions are also underway with a number of other international stars for the 2012 carnival.

President Charlie Baird said the Stawell Athletic Club was very appreciative of the ongoing support provided by Australia Post.

“We are delighted that Australia Post has decided to continue their sponsorship of the Stawell Gift until 2013,” Baird said.

“It is always an anxious time when such a major sponsorship is up for renewal, and despite our long-term partnership, we have never taken their valuable support for granted.”

Alex Twomey, General Manager External Affairs & Reputation, of Australia Post said the partnership with the Stawell Athletic Club was an integral part of their support for regional Victoria.

“Australia Post is delighted to be able to continue its association with the Stawell Gift and the Stawell community more broadly,” Twomey said.

“Australia Post’s long standing commitment to rural and regional communities makes this partnership much more than simply a sponsorship.”

Returning to the original four-day format next year, the 131st edition of the Australia Post Stawell Gift will be staged over the Easter long weekend from April 6 to 9, 2012.

Highlights of the 2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift

- The attraction of high calibre international and national elite athletes who were invaluable promotional tools and event drawcards

- The 17th year of Australia Post support and increased Victorian Government funding, with a total of 28 race and carnival sponsors

- Two hours of live television coverage around Australia on Finals Day (Easter Tuesday) on ONE. The coverage reached an international audience via the Australia Network which broadcast the two-hour program to 22 million homes in 44 countries across Asia, the Pacific and the Indian subcontinent

- More than 80,000 listeners from around Victoria tuned in to the two-hour live radio broadcast on ABC radio

- An 8% increase in prize money to a record $126,500, further cementing the event as Australia’s richest footrunning carnival.

- An extensive marketing program that focused on engaging the youth amateur athletics market, and as a result, race entries rose 19%. The introduction of the Victorian Little Athletics program to the carnival saw strong participation and attendance by families across the weekend.

New deals deliver Stawell Gift boost

STAWELL - Sport and Recreation Minister, Hugh Delahunty, was delighted to make the announcement on Friday that Australia's oldest professional foot race, the Stawell Gift, would continue its long association with Australia Post for at least another two years.

Speaking at the Stawell Athletic Club, Mr Delahunty said Australia Post would remain as the Stawell Gift's naming rights sponsor until at least 2013, extending the partnership to 19 years.

"In such a competitive market the support of sponsors such as Australia Post is crucial to ensuring iconic events such as the Stawell Gift can grow and prosper," Mr Delahunty said.

"This announcement is further great news for the race following the Victorian Government commitment to secure the Stawell Gift's future with funding of $600,000 over the next four years on top of the $150,000 provided to this year's Gift."

Mr Delahunty said financial support for the Stawell Gift from the Victorian Government and Australia Post had allowed the Stawell Athletic Club to embark on some long-term projects, which in 2011 saw the creation of the 'Stawell Central Tent City', an increase in prize money to $126,500 and the development of a marketing program that helped boost race entries by 19 percent. Mr Delahunty described the Australia Post Stawell Gift as an iconic event not only for Stawell, but Australian sport.

"The Stawell Gift is a unique event, having been run for the past 131 years," Mr Delahunty said.

"It is one of those events that as a Member of Parliament, I want to ensure stays in country Victoria. We need to make sure that Victoria has events such as this continuing throughout rural and regional Victoria.

"The Stawell Gift is one event that is right up the top with other major events in Victoria."

Mr Delahunty said it was vital for the event to secure sponsorship such as that committed by Australia Post, along with government support.

“We as a government were eager to come on board. The previous government supported the event and there was a lot of work carried out on Central park. However, importantly we needed to go another step further, so on on top of the $150,000 for this year, the State Government is committing a further $600,000 over the next four years to the event.

“There is talk of establishing a tent city, as we all know accommodation is a concern in Stawell at Easter.

We also need to be able to market the event in Stawell, Western Victoria, across other parts of the state, across Australia and internationally.

“We know how exciting it gets when international runners come to Stawell to compete.

“The facilities and the ground here are fantastic, but I want athletes of all ages to be inspired by the athletes they see competing here and on television.

“We need to ensure we get the athletes to inspire the young people in particular to take part in this magnificent event.

“I am a regular at the Australia Post Stawell Gift, it is one of those events you’ve just got to be at. It is one of the major events on the Australian sporting calendar and I want to make sure it continues to grow and prosper.”

Member for Western Victoria David O’Brien said the Australia Post Stawell Gift was an extremely important event for Stawell and regional Victoria.

“Much more than just an athletics carnival, the Gift is synonymous with Stawell, which for four days during Easter every year showcases the very best of regional Victoria,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The Australia Post Stawell Gift attracts people to Stawell in large numbers, providing an estimated annual boost to the local economy of $10 million.”
