Photo finish decides Ipswich Gift

Queensland Times
29th August 2011

Luke Wilkinson (blue shirt) dips his head on the line to win
yesterday’s Ipswich Lightning Gift.

WITH an Olympic prospect, a set of twins and an Ipswich contender, yesterday’s $3000 Ipswich Lightning Gift final had it all.

However, only one person could secure victory – a “pocket rocket” from Toowoomba.

Glennie Athletics Club competitor Luke Wilkinson was finally declared the victor after judges had to closely scan the photo finish on a wet Bill Paterson Oval.

Many thought London Olympics relay hopeful and backmarker Andrew McCabe had won the exciting 110m dash. But Wilkinson denied the Stawell Gift finalist the title by a 0.01 second.

“It feels great,” a puffing Wilkinson said after his first Ipswich Gift success.

“I’m trying to get in as much (competition) as I can while I get a job.”

The 17-year-old said competing in races like the Ipswich Gift helped him become a better runner.

After what seemed a long wait for the result, Brisbane-based McCabe was ranked second with a time of 11.39s.

Ipswich club runner and school teacher Doug Amiss had to settle for third (11.42s).

“It was so close, he just got me on the line,” McCabe said, showing the mud underneath his running shoes. “My goal is to try and make the Olympic team next year in the 4x100m relay.”

McCabe’s twin brother Josh finished the final in sixth.

Yesterday’s $2000 Ipswich Ladies Gift was earlier won by Emma Rynne.

Rynne (12.16s) beat Emma Lawrence (12.24) with Jasmine Hardy (12.28) third, a fraction ahead of veteran Julie Brims.

Ipswich runners Sarah Jeffreys (sixth) and Kara-Lynn Hodges (eight) gave gallant efforts at the 30th annual Ipswich Winter Carnival.
