Ringwood Athletic Club celebrates its 50th Anniversary

by Lyn Bartold
Maroondah Leader
17 Aug 11

Ringwood Athletic Club began from a meeting called by the Mayor of Ringwood, Cr Bob Horman, in the old Ringwood Town Hall, in 1961. From that meeting the womens club was formed becaming RWAAC and they commenced competition in the 1961 - 62 season. In March the following year the mens club, RWAC, was formed also.

At the time the Victorian Women’s Amateur Athletics Association and the Victorian Amateur Athletics Association conducted the womens and mens competition seperately and the clubs had little contact for the first 20 or so years. It was not until the 80’s that athletics in Victoria moved out of the Dark Ages and amalgamated to become one strong entity. In 1984, at a combined meeting, the womens and mens clubs voted unanimously to joined together to become RAC, Ringwood Athletic Club.

From the beginning Ringwood athletes performed well and placings in State Championships and selection into state teams soon followed. Ringwood’s first Olympian was Jenny Orr and since that time there have been many Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives as well as representation in other Australian teams. Cathy Freeman, Lauren Hewitt, Dave Culbert, Kyle Vander Kuyp and Scott Martin are a few of Ringwood’s past and present members.

The club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a Dinner to be held on Saturday November 19. All past members are invited to attend and information is available by contacting or by ringing Lyn Bartold on 97221526.
