RUNNERS from Pasadena and Magill were stars of the show as up to 1000 competitors braved wintry conditions for Fitzy’s 5 Fun Run in North Adelaide on Sunday.

Paul Morgan, 28, of Pasadena, won a thrilling men’s 5km race, outlasting emerging Bellevue Heights 15-year-old Riley Cocks in a sprint finish.

The women’s race had a surprise winner with Magill’s Casey Wood, 22, beating Flinders Athletics Club runner Paige Graham.

In driving rain, a lead pack of about eight runners, including marathon legend and inaugural Fitzy’s 5 champion Steve Moneghetti, broke clear and stayed together until about the 4000m mark of the race.

Morgan then made his move but could not shake Cocks, as the pair broke clear to wage a one-on-one battle over the final kilometre.

As they turned into Torrens Parade Ground for the last 100m they were neck-and-neck before Morgan drew ahead to win by about two metres.

Flinders runner Robert Killmier finished third, while Moneghetti was fifth.

Morgan’s time of 15.03 was almost 30 seconds faster than Moneghetti’s winning time last year.

“I was rapt to win, I really set myself for this race,’’ Morgan said after the race.

``(The race) is already gaining a bit of prestige with Moneghetti winning it last year.

``I have to give credit to Riley, he ran really well - I couldn’t shake him.

``I’m not sure how much longer I can keep beating him.’‘

Wood also made her move in the final kilometre before crossing the in a time of 17.07 to edge Graham by about four seconds.

``My training’s been going well over the last month,’’ said Wood, the daughter of former Commonwealth Games runner Grenville Wood.

``I now hope to focus on the (Melbourne-based) Zatopek 1500m (in December).’‘

Athletics SA chief executive Adam Bishop was thrilled with the turnout and believed more runners would have competed had the weather been kinder to the event.
