London Olympics calling for Ryan Gregson

BY RYAN GREGSON
Illawarra Mercury
27 Jul, 2011

Ever since I was a four-year-old at the Albion Park Little Athletics Club, it was my dream to run at the Olympics.

Since then, I’ve harboured plans to be an opening bowler for the Australian cricket team, play in the centres for the Dragons and follow my cousin, Casey Eastham, in playing hockey for my country.

But through that time, my biggest goal was to be Olympic champion in the 1500m.

To some people, a year out from the Olympics feels like it’s just around the corner but, to me, it still feels ages away.

Many things can happen in an athlete’s life in one year and you never know what’s around the corner.

The most important thing for me is to keep a lid on things and not get too eager.

I learned the hard way last year when, just after I broke the Australian record in the 1500m, I broke down with a stress fracture in my foot and missed the Commonwealth Games.

It was a rocky road coming back from that injury but my foot has healed and I’m back on track.

I had a few good results in the past few months and my current plan is to run a qualifier in the 1500m for next month’s World Championships in Daegu, Korea.

I had a mild setback a couple of weeks ago with a calf strain and travelled to Ireland and Belgium to see a physiotherapist and a podiatrist.

They got to the bottom of the issue and I seem to be okay.

Even after missing the past fortnight of training, I still plan to run fast in the coming weeks and qualify for the World Championships.

The main event is obviously the London Olympics next year but this year’s World Championships would be the ideal preparation for London.

I’m living over in London during the European Athletics season with a few other Australian athletes in a house that is the perfect base leading into next year.

The house backs onto a park and is only a five-minute jog to a synthetic track and gym.

It’s also only a 25-minute bus ride from Heathrow Airport so it’s convenient to jet off to various meets across Europe.

My goals for the Olympic Games are to get myself into a position to medal.

I was ranked fifth in the world last year and, at 21 years of age, I’m still on the up and with another year in my legs who knows where I’ll be.

At my nan’s house, a big Mercury poster of my cousin Casey is hanging up in the kitchen. I’m hoping I make the team next year and get a poster of me up on the wall next to it.

*Bulli’s Ryan Gregson is the reigning Australian 1500m record holder and a likely representative at next year’s London Olympics.
